Delegate geographical spread

School buildings We all have a part to play ensuring that schools are safe, warm and dry

The building challenge….. 62 million m2 estimated internal area of the school estate’s 21,200 schools 420,000 number of new school places needed between 2016 and 2021 60% estimated percentage of the school estate built before 1976 883 free schools that the DfE expects to have opened by September 2020 270,000 estimated number of free school places that the DfE will fund 2016 - 2021 Extract from NAO report ‘Capital funding for schools’

The operating challenge….. Budget cuts December 2016 news articles - schools will have to find £3bn in savings in 3 years Electricity price rise speculation that suppliers will increase costs by at least 10% Gas prise rise predicted price rise in August Energy consumption schools staying open longer – more community use – thus more energy use Compliance statutory testing of buildings to ensure safety Maintenance high reactive maintenance costs of old school buildings Sustainability leaving a legacy of ‘fit for purpose’ buildings for future generations

What can we do ?….. We need to strive for the Efficient & Effective Estate, making it business normal Understand building condition Aggregate procurements Replacement strategies for 5, 10, 20+ years Use existing procurement routes Proactive & reactive repairs Make use of energy loans Drive value from funding Ensure buildings are compliant & safe Build smart & sustainable Training & support for staff
