Presentation transcript:

Anything that has MASS and takes up SPACE. MATTER Anything that has MASS and takes up SPACE.

PURE SUBSTANCES Matter that ALWAYS has the exact same COMPOSITION and DEFINITE properties.

ELEMENTS A substance that can NOT be broken DOWN into SIMPLER substances. Contain only ONE type of ATOM.

Periodic Table of the Elements

Examples of Elements Oxygen

Examples of Elements Helium

COMPOUND A substance that is made from TWO or more ELEMENTS that are joined in FIXED proportions.

EXAMPLES OF COMPOUNDS H2O Pure Water

Sugar (C6H12O6)

Sodium Chloride NaCl

CO2 Carbon Dioxide

MIXTURES Two or more SUBSTANCES that are MIXED together but not CHEMICALLY combined. The properties will VARY because the composition is not FIXED.

HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture that does NOT appear to be the SAME throughout.

HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture that appears to be the SAME throughout.
