Presentation on theme: "Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures"— Presentation transcript:

1 Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures
Sodium Sodium Chloride Salt Water

2 Elements Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into other substances

3 Compounds Compounds are pure substances made of 2 or more elements chemically combined. Examples: CO2 is Carbon Dioxide CO is Carbon Monoxide C12H22O11 is Sugar

4 Compounds In a compound, the properties are different from those of the individual elements. C12H22O11 is Sugar Carbon is a black solid Hydrogen is a gas Oxygen is a gas

5 CO2 is a molecule and a compound
Compounds What is the difference between a molecule and a compound? Molecule: Particle made of two or more atoms bonded together Compound: Substance made of two or more elements chemically combined O2 is a molecule CO2 is a molecule and a compound

6 Mixtures Mixtures are 2 or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined. Examples: Soil Ice Cream Salad Bowl of Cereal with Milk

7 Mixtures In a mixture, the properties of each individual substance stay the same. The cereal stays cereal The milk stays milk

8 Heterogeneous mixtures
Mixtures where the substances are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture

9 Homogeneous mixtures Mixture where the substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture Peanut Butter

10 How to tell . . . If it is on the periodic table . . . Element
If it has a chemical formula Compound CO2 H2O Na2CO3 Anything else Mixture
