1 Classifying Matter (Part 1)
WCHS Chemistry

2 Matter Anything that has mass & takes up space (<-- A.K.A. volume)
Everything is made of matter! (except energy)

3 Pure Substances Constant composition with fixed ratios of elements
Example → H2O Cannot be separated by physical means!

4 2 Types of Pure Substances
Elements Substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances The building blocks of everything around you! Everything on the Periodic Table :) -- Chlorine, Sulfur... Compounds Two or more elements that are chemically bonded When atoms join, they lose their individual properties and gain NEW properties! (Examples → NaCl, C6H12O6)

5 Mixtures Two or more substances that are mixed together but NOT chemically bonded. Substances retain their individual properties

6 2 Types of Mixtures Homogenous Mixtures
Mixtures that look the same throughout Have a completely even distribution Heterogeneous Mixtures Mixtures in which you can see more than one type of matter Can have more than one phase in the mixture

7 PRACTICE!!
