1 Classifying Matter

2

3 Matter Pure Substance (Constant Composition) Mixtures
Elements (one type of atom) Compounds (combinations of atoms) Mixtures (Variable Composition) Homogenous solutions (solution) Heterogeneous mixtures (mechanical mixture)

4 Pure Substance Made up of all of the same building blocks
Contains only one kind of particle Include compounds and elements Ex. Compounds like water Ex. Elements like carbon

5 Element A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances Ex. Gold One single particle of gold, or any other element, is called an atom Can be found on the periodic table.

6 Compound Pure substance that contain two or more different elements joined in a fixed proportion Ex. Salt NaCl 1 sodium atom joined to 1 chlorine atom make 1 molecule of salt.

7 Mixture Made up of two or more pure substances Two types Heterogeneous
Homogeneous

8 Heterogeneous Mixture
AKA a mechanical mixture You can see different kinds of particles Ex. Granola, soup mix

9 Homogeneous Mixture AKA a solution Looks like one substance
Ex. Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon
