1 Classifying Matter

2 What is matter? Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space.

3 Matter It is broken down into two categories: pure substances and mixtures.

4 Pure Substance: Composition and properties never change from one sample to the next
Ex: Table salt, Oxygen, pure water

5 Mixtures: Composition and properties can change from one sample to the next
Ex: Salsa, lemonade, milk

6 Element: pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler form by ordinary means
Contain only 1 type of atom Atom: smallest particle of an element that keeps the properties of the element

7 Examples of Elements Gold Sodium Chlorine
Precious Metal Reactive metal Green Gas

8 Compound: Pure substance made of two or more elements joined in definite proportions
Made of 2 or more types of atoms Ex: Water (H2O),

9 Compounds Properties of compounds differ from the elements that make them up: O H2 Hydrogen + O2 Oxygen H H H2O (Gas) (Gas) Water (liquid)

10 Types of mixtures Heterogeneous mixture: Parts are unevenly mixed
Chocolate chip cookie Homogeneous mixture (solutions): Parts are evenly mixed throughout Salt water, sugar water

11 Matter Pure Substance Mixture
Matter Tree Matter has mass and occupies space Pure Substance Composition always same Mixture Composition Can change Element Made 1 kind of atom Compound Made Two or more kinds Of atoms Homogeneous Evenly Mixed Heterogeneous Unevenly Mixed
