New Information/Activity As you learned from last lesson, the four zones of Rio de Janeiro are very different from one another. Their contrasting features is very easy to see because of how close together they are. We could say that there are many inequalities in Rio. Inequalities: Differences between poverty and wealth, as well as wellbeing and access to jobs, housing, education, etc… Using your map of the zones of Rio from last lesson and the information on your sheet, complete one of the following activities: Good: Describe what a wealthy zone of Rio is like. Describe what a poor zone of Rio is like. Better: Explain which two zones display the fact that there are inequalities in Rio the most effectively. Best: Explain what you think needs to be done to make the zones of Rio more equal.

New Information/Activity There are 4 main social challenges in Rio: -Healthcare -Education -Energy -Water Supply You will be reading about these challenges and the ways that the city of Rio has tried to solve them. You will look at one information sheet at a time- don’t forget to write the heading in your book. You need to: Read the challenges. Complete either the good, better, or best task. Read the solutions. Complete the “Assess” task. Challenge: If you finish looking at all 4 sheets, decide which challenge you think is the most important to solve. In your book explain why it’s the most important and suggest what could be done to solve it.

Produce a case study on Rio De Janeiro (LIC). You need to include: The location and important of the city regionally, nationally and globally. What is causing the city to grow? How has growth created opportunities? The social challenges – Healthcare, education, energy, water supply. The impact the Olympics and World cup had on parts of Rio. Challenge – What future challenges do you think will effect the city of Rio?
