2 SKILLS vs CONTENT In the 21st century, information is easy to obtain. The internet has made the memorization of facts less important than they once were. In the modern world, thinking skills are crucially important. This course develops the valuable skills of interpreting & evaluating evidence, forming an opinion, and asking powerful questions that lead to deeper understanding of content. Students completing Human Geography will be able to deepen their understanding of humankinds relationship with their surroundings.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Globalization, Industrialization, Development Challenges:; Labour Rights, Environmental Protection, Economic Inequality Solutions: Carbon Footprint, Ethical Sourcing, Fair Trade vs Free Trade

Geography is not about learning and memorizing content ! More about analyzing content and making meaningful connections to the real world Will develop a variety of skills such as: Interpreting, evaluating and presenting data, Thinking geographically Asking powerful questions that lead to deeper understanding of content (geographic inquiry)

 GEOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE Is concerned with the human and physical features that characterize a place Every place is unique and connected Regions are the units by which place is defined What are the similarities and differences between regions of Canada? SPACIAL SIGNIFICANCE How do we determine and assess what features make a geographic area significant? Ex: Why is there increased global interest in the Arctic? Why not Antarctica? -Explain the significance of a place -Assess the important features of a region -Compare multiple regions

PATTERNS & TRENDS How does the variation and distribution of geographic features change over time? How do places change and stay similar over time? Where are the changes occurring? Why there? Geographic Models describe and predict patterns and trends EVIDENCE & INTERPRETATION Focuses on the evidence used to support ideas about geography and how adequate is the interpretation of that evidence How do compare standards of living around the world? Assess multiple types of info sources

INTERRELATIONSHIPS Focuses on the ways in which human and environmental factors interact & influence each other Explore various factors & causes of events Assess the +/- impacts and significance of events Predict the consequences of an earthquake in Vancouver? ETHICAL JUDGMENT Considers whether the practices and outcomes of a geographic action/event is desirable & responsible Recognizes different perspectives & develop thoughtful judgments Should we develop the Alberta Tar Sands?
