Role Models Viv Richards Learning Objectives Characteristics of a role model. How role models can influence young people. How role models can influence the popularity of a sport.

Definition Someone who other people might aspire to be like. Who they look up to and who is seen as a good example to follow. Some teachers role models. Can you guess whose are whose and why?

What is a role model? See Kerboodle

How do role models influence young people? Paula Radcliffe influences young female athletes. One of best known female athletes in the world. One of the best she broke the women’s record for London 2:15:25 in 2003 and has had a long and distinguished career. She trains very hard, is a mum and embraces the responsibility of being a role model fully. As a result she encourages young aspiring girls to pursue their dreams.

Increase the popularity of a sport Beijing Olympics 2008 Rebecca Adlington wins 2 golds making her the most successful British swimmer in 100 years. As a result she in demand from the media giving more exposure. Swimming although popular recreational sport failed to produce elite athletes to compete on world stage. Now young girls can see its possible to become world champions particularly those at her club if they work hard enough.
