Lesson 5 – teacher plan – your sports 5 minutes- diamond 9 – students hsould think of 9 reasons why champions might win and put them in a diamond 9. NOTE – HIGHER SHOULD DO EXTENSION ON HSW RATHER THAN EXPERIMENT ON THEIR REACTION TIME 10 minutes- measure Usain’s time from video answer questions as to why it’s hard to measure (10 minutes Higher ability Extension – powerpoint and explanation accuracy and precision/ random and systematic errors. - Use kerboodle interactive investigation reaction times which examines errors) 10minutes- read book p110 -111 this is a nice double page. 10minutes – measure reaction time use 30cm rulers to measure reaction times. Use table on this power point to work out time. 10minutes – plenary on Olympic sports for higher ability. - sports event interactive crossword for lower ability (could let the boys do it while the girls are out of the room then the vice versa and time both groups for a bit of competition)

 In pairs think of 9 reasons  Put these into a diamond 9!

Learning Objectives Describe how technology is used in sport Describe what is meant by reaction time Identify random and systematic errors Suggest ways to minimise errors Keywords Reaction time Projectile motion Uncertainty

Time how long Usain took when he broke the 100m record using your stop watch?  What were the issues with the timing?  How are these overcome at sporting events? In case the video doesn’t work… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By1JQFxfLMMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By1JQFxfLMM

What do the terms accuracy and precision mean? What are the different types of errors that can occur? Can you identify possible sources of error in these scenarios?  Using a stopwatch to measure a race time.  Using eyesight to see who wins a swimming race.

What does the phrase 'reaction time' mean? How does the length of reaction time affect professional athletes?

Distance on a ruler (cm) Reaction time (s) 50.10 100.14 150.18 200.20 250.23

Learning Objectives Describe how technology is used in sport Describe what is meant by reaction time Identify random and systematic errors Suggest ways to minimise errors Keywords Reaction time Projectile motion Uncertainty

Choose one of these sports and identify the accuracy and precision in each scenario. Where might the random and systematic errors in measuring the winners.
