Section 1.2: Microscopes allow us to see inside the cell

Cells are divided into two categories Eukaryotic cell – cell with a nucleus, that contains genetic material (DNA) -eukaryotic cells have: organelles - parts of a cell that perform specific functions (jobs) Prokaryotic cell – cell without a nucleus, genetic material (DNA) is in the cytoplasm

Eukaryotic Cell Prokaryotic Cell

Cells are diverse cytoplasm - “jellylike” material inside cell - holds everything in place - “Jell-O Mold”

Plant Cell cytoplasm

Cells are diverse Eukaryotic cells have: organelles - parts of a cell cytoplasm - “jellylike” material inside cell cell membrane - covering that controls entry/exit “The Traffic Cop”

Plant Cell cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells Nucleus - stores genetic material (DNA) “The Control Center”

Plant Cell nucleus cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells Nucleus- stores genetic material “The Control Center” Ribosomes - builds protein “Protein Factories”

Plant Cell nucleus ribosomes cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells Nucleus- stores genetic material (DNA) “The Control Center” Ribosomes - builds protein “Protein Factories” Endoplasmic reticulum - moves proteins around cell “Cell Highway”

Plant Cell nucleus endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells Nucleus- stores genetic material (DNA) “The Control Center” Ribosomes - builds protein “Protein Factories” Endoplasmic reticulum - moves proteins around cell “Cell Highway” Vesicles - moves proteins from E.R . to G.A. - “The Delivery Truck”

Plant Cell nucleus vesicles endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes cytoplasm cell membrane

Nucleus- stores genetic material (DNA) “The Control Center” Ribosomes - builds protein “Protein Factories” Endoplasmic reticulum - moves proteins around cell “Cell Highway” Vesicles - moves proteins from E.R . to G.A. - “The Delivery Truck” Golgi apparatus - finishes packaging proteins “The Finisher”

Plant Cell Golgi apparatus nucleus vesicles endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells Mitochondria - processes food using oxygen - needed for cellular respiration - gives us energy “Powerhouse of the Cell”

Plant Cell Golgi apparatus nucleus vesicles endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes mitochondria cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells *cell wall - tough outer covering - shapes and supports a plant cell

Plant Cell Golgi apparatus nucleus vesicles endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes mitochondria *cell wall cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells *cell wall - tough outer covering - shapes and supports a plant cell *chloroplasts - makes sugar (food) with sunlight - where photosynthesis occurs

Plant Cell Golgi apparatus nucleus vesicles endoplasmic reticulum *chloroplast ribosomes mitochondria *cell wall cytoplasm cell membrane

Organelles found in cells *cell wall - tough outer covering - shapes and supports a plant cell *chloroplasts - makes sugar (food) with sunlight - where photosynthesis occurs *central vacuole - holds water and waste

Plant Cell Golgi apparatus nucleus vesicles endoplasmic reticulum *chloroplast ribosomes *central vacuole mitochondria *cell wall cytoplasm cell membrane

Animal Cell endoplasmic reticulum nucleus ribosomes Golgi apparatus vesicles cytoplasm mitochondria cell membrane

Organelles found in cells *lysosomes (only found in animal cells) - break down waste materials “Digestion Center”

Animal Cell endoplasmic reticulum nucleus ribosomes Golgi apparatus *lysosomes vesicles cytoplasm mitochondria cell membrane
