Welcome to Honors ENGLISH 3 Welcome to Honors ENGLISH 3! The American Dream Heidi Little Please sign in! hlittle@everettsd.org

My background Attended Cascade High School (go class of 2001!) Everett CC (AA) Western (BA in English and Teaching Certification) UW Bothell (Master’s in Ed ~ literacy focus) 10th year full-time teaching at JHS (student taught here as well!) Completed my Pro-Teach certification three years ago Attended the Pre-AP institute four years ago; Have attended the AP institute for Literature twice and for Language (rhetoric) this summer I LOVE DISNEY!

How is Honors different from core? Quicker pace Students have strong foundation in reading/writing/communication Higher level thinking/skills/knowledge (grammar, texts, questions) Independent learners Rely heavily on Socratic method (learning through questioning) Depth and breadth

SpringBoard District adopted English curriculum 6-12 Pathway to AP / College Readiness Aligned to National ‘Common Core Standards’ ‘Consumable’ Student Workbooks Students have registered for online access (‘consumable’ materials available / unit assessments taken online) Link on my webpage!

Class Materials to look for… SpringBoard Student Workbook Composition Book with labeled sections – Writer’s Notebook (WNB) Independent Novel

Additional Materials Needed Pencils/Pens Paper Highlighters Post-It / Sticky Notes …we want students to be interactive with their SpringBoard workbooks and all reading materials.

SpringBoard AP Connections: Understanding strong relationships among author’s purpose, use of literary/stylistic devices, and desired effect. Gleaning and synthesizing information from a variety of texts to respond to an AP prompt. Writing in response to a synthesis prompt like those used on the AP Language Exam. Writing to interpret, evaluate, and negotiate differing critical perspectives in literature.

4 SpringBoard Units Unit 1: How do writers use the strategies of definition to define a concept? What is the American Dream? Unit 2: How can artistic expression advance social commentary? How are the components of rhetoric applied to the creation and delivery of persuasive speeches?

4 SpringBoard Units Unit 3: How do news outlets impact public opinion or public perception? How does a writer use tone to advance an opinion? Unit 4: What does it mean to pursue happiness? How can a writer use/manipulate genre conventions for effect?

4 SpringBoard Units Unit 5: How do cultural movements such as the Harlem Renaissance reflect and create people’s attitudes and beliefs? How is one writer’s work both a natural product of and departure from the ideas of a specific literary movement in American literature?
