9 FISH PHILOSOPHY

10  The FISH! Philosophy® emerged in 1998 from Seattle's world-famous Pike Place Fish Market.

11  Even in a workplace where fishmongers spent stinky, grueling 12-hour shifts stocking, selling and packing fish, remarkable results can occur when people accept the invitation to:

12  1) Be There for their coworkers and customers  2) Play  3) Make someone’s day  4) Choose their attitude about how they show up for work.

13  As a result, the FISH! film, now has now been translated into 17 languages. Next came FISH! the book, currently translated into 34 languages.

16 Expected Student Learner Outcomes: (taken from State and Common Core Standards) Upon completing this course, students should be able to: –Analyze and interpret samples of good writing, identifying and explaining an author’s use of rhetorical strategies and techniques –Apply effective strategies and techniques in their own writing –Create and sustain arguments based on reading, research, and/or personal research –Demonstrate understanding and mastery of standard written English as well as stylistic maturity in their own writings –Write for a variety of purposes –Produce expository and persuasive compositions that introduce a complex central idea and develop it with appropriate evidence drawn from primary or secondary source material –Demonstrate understanding of the conventions of citing primary and secondary source material

17 Continued: –Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make inferences from it –Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas –Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text –Assess how point of view, purpose, characters, and setting shape the content and style of a text –Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts proficiently

18 Required Supplies: –Notebook or binder, 2 folders, pens, #2 pencils. At times, crayons, markers, and poster board may be needed.

19 Types of Assignments: –Reading- short stories, novels, essays, poetry, –Essays- persuasive, narrative/descriptive, expository –In class timed writings- analysis, argument, synthesis –Journals- reflections –Group projects- team building, cooperative learning, group presentations –ACT preparation- practice tests, practice multiple-choice passages, practice essays, Vocab Rock, reading comprehension

20 Assignment/Make Up Policy: –I will take all late work for ½ credit until the last Wednesday on the quarter. –All absent work/ late work will be graded approx. every two weeks. –If you have an absent assignment, you MUST write absent at the top and have me initial it, or IT WILL BE CONSIDERED LATE! –Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class. Assignments turned in after class will be counted as late. –Projects and papers may be turned in up to 3:50 on the due date and still be taken for full credit.

21 ***ALL ABSENT WORK AND MISSING ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ENTERED AS A 0 AND MISSING IN THE GRADEBOOK. ONCE THE ASSIGNMENT IS TURNED IN AND GRADED, THEN THE UPDATED SCORE WILL BE ENTERED INTO THE GRADEBOOK THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! MAKE SURE YOUR PARENTS KNOW THIS!

23  Plagiarism/Cheating: Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in my class. If you are caught doing either, you will receive a 0 on the project.

24 Tentative Curriculum: –Grammar/ Writing Review –Early American Writing –The Crucible –American Romanticism/ Regionalism –Research –Harlem Renaissance/ Modernism –Of Mice and Men –Contemporary Literature (We will study these in reverse chronological order this year.)
