Using your text read about the Italian city states Using your text read about the Italian city states. Answer section assessment questions on page 440. read pg 352-354-who is Machiavelli and what did he Do for politics?

About Machiavelli The Italian Renaissance developed in an environment in which politics took on an increasingly competitive, secular tone. Within each Italian state, parties fought for power while at the same time the states fought each other for dominance or advantage. After 1492, Italy was invaded numerous times by Spain, France, and the Holy Roman Empire. These developments are reflected in the life and work of the great Renaissance political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527). Born in Florence when it was under the rule of the Medicis, Machiavelli initiated his career in the Florentine civil service in 1498 during the period when the Medicis were out of power, replaced by a republican government. He rose to important diplomatic posts within the government, but was forced into retirement when the Medici family came back to power in 1512. He never gave up hope of returning to favor, and he wrote his most famous work, The Prince (1513), in part as an application to the Medic rulers for a job in the Florentine government. The book has since become a classic treatise in political theory, above all for the way that it divorces politics from theology and metaphysics. Source: Western Civilization, Vol. 1. Edited by Dennis Sherman. McGraw-Hill, 1991.

Sect 2 France and Sect 3 Germany/Flanders The Renaissance spread to Germany and Flanders. Religious scholars learned Greek and Hebrew. Scholars wanted changes to make Church teachings simpler. German merchants appreciated Renaissance values and established a new privileged middle class. Johann Gutenberg developed a printing press of movable type. New ideas could be spread rapidly. Northern European artists (Hubert and Jan Van Eyck) painted scenes from the Bible and daily life with oils. France was influenced by the Renaissance. French kings became fascinated by Italian architecture, art and fashions. Nobles hired Italian architects to design chateaux. French authors were encouraged to model works of the Italian authors. Most famous French author was Rabelais.

The Renaissance took root in Spain in the 15th century. It was influenced by the close ties between the Catholic Church and government. Cardinal Jimenez believed in the value of learning and helped found universities. He helped produce a translation of the Bible ( Greek, Latin, Hebrew). The palace at El Escorial served as the royal court and became a symbol of the power and religious devotion of Spanish rulers. Toledo became a center for painting and poetry. El Greco’s long-bodied figures were much like Byzantine pieces. Miguel de Cervantes was a noted author who wrote Don Qixote. Sect 4 Spain
