16 Humanism The ideas of the intellectual movement known as humanism influenced the Renaissance Instead of religious issues, humanists studied worldly subjects They hoped to use ancient learning to increase knowledge about their own times Renaissance artists studied ancient Greek and Roman art They copied the ancient realistic style Painters developed new ways to make their paintings realistic Studied the human body and used live models when they painted

17 Renaissance Moves North
Northern Europe took a long time to recover from the Black Death As a result, the Renaissance did not begin there until the 1400s Slowly spread to Spain, France, Germany, and England A German artist named Albrecht Dürer traveled to Italy to study Italian art When he returned home, he helped spread the ideas of the Italian Renaissance throughout Germany Like Italian humanists, northern humanists believed that education was important and studied ancient Greeks and Romans However, they also explored religious ideas and believed that learning should change society Erasmus wanted to reform the Church – translated the New Testament into the vernacular Sir Thomas More wanted to build a perfect society of peace and harmony – no one is idle, all are educated, justice is used to end the crime, not end the criminal
