Basketball Gameplay NYSPHSAA High School Basketball Rules This will be a highly competitive type class. I understand everybody wants to win but this is not the NBA. Any fighting, arguing with the referees, or any type of intolerable behavior will be dealt with accordingly Please see me if a problem arises

Sportspersonship Statement The primary goal of the rules is to maximize the safety and enjoyment of the student-athlete. Sportsmanship is a key part of that goal. Sportsmanship should be a core value in behavior of players and bench personnel, in crowd control by game management and in the officials’ proper enforcement of the rules governing related actions

Sport Education Model This type of teaching represents the set-up of a real season. It includes; Draft Pre-Season Regular Season Post-Season Teams will consist of six to seven players and each team will play each other multiple times throughout the season

Season Cont. Some teams will be playing, while others will participate in “Duty Roles” Referees Statisticians Score Keeper Equipment Manager There may be mistakes but it is important to do the best you can for each team

Rating System Each team will get a chance to rate the referees after each game This will help to find the best possible referees for Post-Season play Each referee will get a chance to rate the teams sportsmanship after each game Teams with a low sportsmanship rating will not be allowed to play during the Post-Season and may have to forfeit other games

Draft Students will be chosen / volunteer to be a captain Captains will pick their team during a draft day in class Students will be given ratings based on their performance in the Skills Challenge Assessment Trades will be allowed Trade Deadline after 4th PE Class To trade a player, the vote must be unanimous by both teams and be cleared by the commissioner (teacher)

Teams Teams will consist of as least 6 players Five on the floor with 1-2 substitutes All teams will participate in Duty Roles Each team needs to come up with an appropriate name and team colors Teams will create a cheer or slogan Team colors will be worn to class on Game days (Numbered Pinnies)

Course Layout Day 1 Intro Power Point Assign Ref Quiz Skills Assessment Challenge w/ Partner Volunteers for Captains

Course Layout Day 2 Draft Review Duty Roles Introduce Equipment Set-up / Take down Tables, Chairs, Bench, Basketballs, Folders with Assessment Sheets, Pencils Pre Season Game Students will have a chance to play and practice duty roles

Course Layout Day 3 Finish reviewing duty roles with any team that have not completed them Mini Practice Begin Regular Season if time

Referee Terminology The basketball official (or referee) is responsible for seeing that the game of basketball is played within the confines of the rules. Individuals are required to complete a rigorous training program to become certified as a basketball official. Pages 17 - 18
