3 Court setting

4 Game Information 2 twenty-minute halves.
Teams have 1 Timeout per half. Clock runs continuously except for: Officials timeout Player timeouts Penalty Shots

5 Overtime One 3-minute period (NO GOLDEN GOAL)
Possession goes by a coin toss Teams stay on the same side they used during the second half No Timeouts. Clock runs continuously except for under 1 minute during penalty shots.

6 Overtime If the 3-minute overtime ends in a draw we go to a shootout.
Captains will select four participants to shoot The coin toss will determine who shoots and which side of the court the teams will shoot on. In the event the 4v4 shootout ends in a draw. There will be a 1 person shootout system.

7 Mercy Rule If a team leads by ten or more goals at or inside the final two minutes of the second half, the game shall be over.

8 Starting the game A team must have 4 people to begin the game.
If a team has under 4 players 10 minutes after the game is scheduled to start, the team will forfeit. A forfeit Results as a 1-0 loss for that team and a 0 for sportsmanship. Teams need a 3.8 sportsmanship rating to be playoff eligible.

9 Goal Area: Only the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area, (Goal area includes the goal area line and the solid arc.) The offensive player is allowed to fly in the goal area, but must jump before the line and must release the ball before landing. Upon landing the player must immediately exit the goal area. Penalty for an offensive player entering the goal area illegally: Goalie Throw Penalty for a defensive player defending the ball in the goal area: Free Throw Penalty for a defensive player playing the ball in the goal area: Penalty Shot

10 Goalie Regulations The goalie is not allowed to leave the goalie arc with the ball. It must be passed out of the arc. One the goalie goes outside of the arc, they are a regular player and must dribble to advance the ball. May not receive a pass from a field player while in the goal area. The goalie is not allowed to touch the ball outside of the goal arc while he/she is inside the goal arc.

11 Goalie Regulations When the goalie throws the ball into play, the pass may not cross the half court line. If done so, then a change of possession occurs at half court. A ball blocked by the goalie that bounces once can be retrieved by either team, given that neither team retrieves the ball within the three point arc. A ball going behind the goal line is an AUTOMATIC goalie throw regardless of whom, offense or defense, touched it last.

12 Steps Players may take 3 steps with the ball after gaining possession (landing after catching a ball is step 0). Players may hold the ball for no longer than 5 seconds total. If held for longer than 5 seconds it will result in a delay of game warning and loss of possession. There is no limit on continuously dribbling the ball. However, players must legally dribble. A player may do any or all of these things (in order) during one 5 second possession: Take 3 steps Dribble (as many times as desired) Take 3 steps after dribble has been picked up Pass or shoot at any time during possession

13 Steps Violations will be called similar to basketball (traveling, double dribble, carry, etc.) Three steps are called like in basketball (Jump stops count as one complete step). The five second count starts as soon as the player gains control of the ball. Fumbling of the ball does not count as possession/control.

14 Playing the Ball A Player CANNOT: A Player CAN:
Dribble the ball for an unlimited amount of time. Run with the ball for up to three steps before and after dribbles. A Player CANNOT: Endanger an opponent with the ball Pull, hit, or punch the ball out of the hands of an opponent. Contact the ball below the knees. Block a throw or shot from behind. (Penalty Shot and yellow card) A single player may not possess the ball for more than 5 total seconds at a time.

15 Playing the Ball ·A player may not pass to him/herself. Consecutive possessions by the same player may only occur after a missed or blocked shot or tipped ball by the defense. · Field players may not purposely touch the ball below the knee. Goalies may use kick saves within the goalie box. Outside the goalie box, the goalie is a regular field player. · A throw-in is awarded to a team when the ball is knocked out of bounds (sideline) by the opposing team at the sideline nearest to the spot of last touch. · A goal is scored when the entire ball has passed over the goal line between the goal post and under the crossbar.

16 Playing the Ball Defending players must remain 5 feet away from the throw in. If the goalie was last to touch while making a save, the goalie will remain in possession of the ball. Both feet must be touching the ground during a throw in. If the ball is knocked down by the opposing team and stays within the boundaries, the ball will stay live. All fouls will result in a restart granted at the site of the infraction. A player may not pull, hit, or punch the ball out of the hands of an opponent. If a defensive player attempts to do so, a foul is called, and the offensive team will be granted a restart from the spot of the foul.

17 Playing the Ball There is NO SLIDING, HOLDING, HITTING, ROUGHING, HITTING THE BALL OUT OF THE HANDS, OR FIGHTING during Intramural Team Handball. This is a non-contact sport. Anyone violating these rules repeatedly will be removed from the game by the Intramural Student Program Assistant on duty and will be subject to further sanctions by the Coordinator of Intramural Sports.

18 Shooting Field players may not enter the shooting arc (3-point line) unless their momentum carries them into the area. If this happens, they must immediately leave the shooting arc once their momentum has stopped. When shooting, the ball must be released before touching the ground and the offensive player must immediately leave the arc if the shot is missed and play resumes. If a rebound is gained by the offensive team, and is scored while an offensive player is within the goal crease, the goal is removed. All goals are worth one (1) point.

19 After a Score. Once a goal is scored the goalie picks up the ball and proceeds to pass it to his/her teammate to start the game back up. Defenders are allowed to intercept the ball. Normal rules apply.

20 Ball out of Play Any ball leaving the area of play near the touchline shall be restarted with a throw-in from the nearest spot. Any ball leaving the area of play behind the end line will be restarted by a goalie throw.

21 Simultaneous Possession
If both opponents gain possession of the ball simultaneously, there will be a jump ball at the spot where the simultaneous possession occurs between the two opponents.

22 Fouls, Violations, and Penalty Shots
Throw-ins are awarded for all fouls (except shooting fouls and fouls from behind) and violations at the spot of the foul or violation. All defensive players must be at least 5 feet away from the throw in spot. Both feet must be kept on the ground during a throw in.

23 Fouls & Violations Fouls Include:
Knocking the ball out of a player’s hand Pushing, hitting, tripping, holding Blocking/Charging Violations Include: Taking more than three steps Holding the ball for more than five seconds Double Dribbles Illegal Substitutions Penalties

24 Penalty Shots A penalty shot is awarded when:
A foul interferes with a clear chance to score. The goalie carries the ball back into the goalie area or it is passed back to the goalie in the arc. Anytime a pass or shot is blocked from behind. Any player on the team may take the penalty shot for a team, except on shooting fouls. If a team is noticeably stalling (not attempting to score or shoot) they will have 10 seconds to attempt a shot on goal. If they do not attempt a shot on a goal a penalty shot will be awarded to the opposing team.

25 Yellow Cards A Yellow/Red card system will be used to control player, coach and bench personnel unsportsmanlike conduct and improper behavior (persistent infringement of any rules of the game). When cautioning a player, coach, or other bench personnel, the official shall display a Yellow card and indicate the person concerned. Any player receiving a yellow card must leave the playing area, and his or her team will play short for the next 2-minutes.

26 Red Cards The second yellow card displayed on the same person in the same contest for any unsportsmanlike conduct shall be a Red card. When ejecting a player, coach, or other bench personnel the official shall display a Red card and indicate the person concerned. A player, coach or other bench personnel receiving a Red card shall be ejected from the game and must leave the playing facility. Their team will then play short for 2-minutes.

27 Conduct Team captains are responsible for the conduct of their players, sidelines, and spectators. If a player is red carded and refuses to tell his/her name, the captain may be red carded if he/she will not reveal the name and the team may be subject to a forfeit. Team captains who cannot or will not control their sidelines and/or spectators will be issued a caution (yellow card), and ejection (red card) if necessary.
