“ ” It was the right time for an expert second opinion. Larry didn’t hesitate to contact Cleveland Clinic’s MyConsult® Online Medical Second Opinion Program when he needed to address health issues caused by a heart condition. He was experiencing all the symptoms of heart failure, including severe fatigue and shortness of breath. His medications were not working anymore, and his quality of life was deteriorating.

The Expert Second Opinion A Cleveland Clinic cardiovascular expert quickly confirmed the diagnosis of Larry’s local physicians, who advised that he be implanted with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), a mechanical pump that helps the heart pump blood. The Cleveland Clinic expert said Larry should pursue the LVAD, but was concerned about his lung function and low body weight.

The Results A heart center in Larry’s hometown confirmed the specialist’s concerns, and Larry was rejected as a candidate for the LVAD. When they determined his lungs were worse than his heart, however, Larry’s treatment was modified to include steroids, which helped him to miraculously recover. Still unable to tolerate his heart medications, Larry visited an endocrinologist and rheumatologist who determined an underlying inflammatory disease, which was successfully treated. All in all, Larry gained back 35 pounds, exercises regularly and tolerates his medications well.
