Referencing and plagiarism

What is referencing? Referencing is how you acknowledge the work of other people in your own assignments. When you have used their words or even just their ideas!

Why should I reference? Think about how you have felt when someone has copied your work? Has anyone ever used your identify or ‘stolen’ from you? Good referencing will help you to avoid accusations of plagiarism.

Why should I reference? Plagiarism This is when you copy somebody else’s words or ideas. If you just copy sentences from a book or a website without saying where you got them from that’s plagiarism, and it’s the same if you do it with a friend’s essay. We need to be strict about plagiarism, and anyone found to plagiarise could fail an assignment and could even be kicked off their course… Write your own definition

You are more likely to achieve the highest grades! Why should I reference? Referencing means that: your arguments will be clearly supported by evidence your work will be more convincing your reader can find your sources your teacher can see how widely you have read and whether you fully understand the work your work will reflect expected academic values and good academic practice AND You are more likely to achieve the highest grades!

J.McHugh BTEC Research You will have to do a great deal of research and use a lot of sources for your assignments. You can use: Textbooks Magazines Newspaper Articles Web site addresses PowerPoints and resources from lessons Online videos Other sources?

Good sources of information for Health & Social Care AND…all the books and magazines in the Learning Resources Centre. REMEMBER…some books from other departments may also be relevant for Health & Social Care! Ask your teachers to recommend some books for you and go and explore!

How to do it… Keep a record as you go… Websites visited and date you looked at it Articles you read – title name of the author Books you read – name of the author, title and publisher Page numbers of any specific points …even if you don’t plan to directly quote from them! Keep a record as you go…

How to do it… List all the sources of information together (don’t worry about separating websites and books) List them alphabetically by author’s or editor’s surname If the author is unknown, just use the title of the source instead

How to do it… Order the information for each source you use like this: The author’s or editor’s name and a comma Their initial The year of publication (in brackets) The title of the book, programme, magazine, article in italics Place of publication Name of publisher The golden rule is just to give it a try…be consistent in keeping a list of your sources…your teachers will help you and it will become easier with practice!
