History Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a gym teacher at a YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He combined parts of tennis, baseball, basketball and handball to create a new game to be played indoors by people who wanted less physical contact than basketball.

VOLLEYBALL TERMS Kill Ace Attack Attacker Block Foul Hit Rotation  A serve not returned by the opposing team.   Attack  An attempt by the offensive team to end the rally by hitting the ball to the floor of the defensive team.  Attacker  A player who spikes or hits the ball over the net. Block  The action, above the net, by a player resulting in preventing a spike from entering their side of the  court.  Foul Any violation of the rules that results in the referee blowing their whistle.  Hit  A term used for a spike or an attack.  Kill  A shot that is not returned by the defense.  Rotation A team earns a side out and then moves one position clockwise on the court before the next serve. Serve A skill used to put the ball into play. Spike .  A powerful attack that puts the ball into the opponents court by jumping and hitting the ball with one hand  Assist   A passing or setting the ball to a teammate who attacks the ball for a kill.
