Overview of EdD Requirements

Overview of EdD Requirements 60-credit POST-MASTERS degree (meaning a Masters degree is required) No credits from Masters can be transferred into program Up to 18 hours of additional graduate credit (beyond Masters) may be transferred into program Core requirements 30 credits of IST courses (including R711 and R690) 9 credits of inquiry (Y520, Y502, Y611) 3 credits of foundations (P540 or D505) Minimum 9 credits of minor (sometimes 12) Minimum 9 credits of dissertation (including R795 and R799) Online information: http://education.indiana.edu/students/graduates/programs/ist/index.html http://education.indiana.edu/students/graduates/index.html

IST Course Requirements Minimum of 30 credit hours of IST courses Required: R711 – Readings in Instructional Technology R690 – Research Methods in Instructional Technology For individuals with a NON-IST Masters: R511 – Introduction to IST R521 – Instructional Design and Development R541 – Instructional Technology Production Processes R561 – Evaluation R621 – Analysis Based on review of Masters transcript, advisor may recommend/require any of the above courses Other IST electives can be determined based on student interests/consultation with advisor

Inquiry and Foundations Requirements Minimum of 9 credit hours of inquiry: Y520 – Research Methods Y502 – Intermediate Statistics (will also include a 1-credit Y500 course focusing on SPSS) Y611 – Qualitative Inquiry Methods Students may choose additional inquiry courses based on interest/consultation with advisor Minimum of 3 credit hours of foundations (select ONE) P540 – Learning Theories Also a required class in Learning Sciences minor D505 – Adult Learning through the Lifespan Also a required class in Adult Education minor

Doctoral Minor Requirements 9 credit hours Students must select a faculty member from the minor to serve on their advisory committee Minor qualifying exam – depends on the minor. Most do not require a minor qualifying exam Current minor areas available (within SOE): Learning Sciences LCLE Adult Education (this is the preferred minor) Educational Leadership Special Education

Residency Requirements All EdD students must attend a MINIMUM of ONE IST conference But we’d love you to come to more! All EdD students must complete qualifying exam on campus All EdD students must complete dissertation defense on campus

Credit Transfer Process/Revalidation Up to 18 graduate credits (beyond initial Masters degree) may be transferred into program THIS WILL USUALLY NOT BE POSSIBLE IST type courses will be the easiest to transfer Transfer courses must be at graduate level Courses receiving a grade below a B cannot be transferred “Independent study” or “Thesis” credits cannot be transferred Students must have completed transfer courses a minimum of seven years prior to the date they are admitted to candidacy, or revalidation of the course is required Common ways to revalidate a course: Successfully competing a more advanced course Teaching/team teaching the course or a similar course Completing a project that demonstrates knowledge of the course content Demonstrated work experience related to course content

Important Tips! PLEASE consult with your academic advisor before registering for classes EACH semester PLEASE register for classes as soon as possible EACH semester Classes fill up quickly (particularly inquiry classes) and once they are full there isn’t much we can do Distance students are given a registration “window” at the beginning of the registration period. Once that window is past, any student can register for a distance class (i.e., residential students) For classes in your MINOR, consult with your minor advisor (or a faculty member in your minor area) Course substitutions for our requirements are RARE “Do I have to take stats?”
