University of Minnesota Driven to Discover PhD 38 Grad Course Credits  ME 8888 can only be taken after passing the Preliminary Exam which consists of a written research proposal and oral defense.  Register as soon as you are eligible. 24 Thesis Credits  Minimum of 18 ME grad course credits [5000 and 8000 level) (A/F)  Maximum of 20 other grad science/technology credits (A/F)- may include 12 credits in a designated minor  Minimum of 12 8000-level credits (A/F)  Research Ethics & Professional Conduct, 3 credit max. (S/N)  2-3 Seminar Credits (S/N)  Course selection MUST be approved by Adviser and DGS via Degree Program Form  Min. GPA of 3.00

The number of course credits that can be transferred from another university will be determined on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the adviser and DGS. Doctoral thesis or any other type of research credits earned at another university cannot be applied toward the thesis credit requirement. A thesis done at another university cannot be transferred to the University of Minnesota. A maximum of 12 graduate course credits taken as a non-degree or non-admitted student may be considered for inclusion in the course program once the student is enrolled in the graduate program.
