Roundtable 1: Collaboration of academia & industry in SDOs Collaboration among academia, industry, and global standards organizations to develop international standards for a sustainable future

Roundtable 1: Collaboration of academia & industry in SDOs IEEE, as a global standards organization, helps makes data that is relevant to academic research available by offering the ability for any individual to attend IEEE standards meetings and contribute/learn about technology that is being standardized, which in effect contributes available knowledge for students and academia. IEEE helps to facilitate access to resources to support academic research through: Forums Conferences ezine outreach

Roundtable 1: Collaboration of academia & industry in SDOs Yes, cooperation with standards organizations could facilitate the design/implementation of new standardization courses that match the needs of specific groups of employers. For example, IEEE recently participated in roadmap exercises and gap analysis focused on the Smart Grid. The resulting gaps in standardization highlight an area where courses could be developed that would assist industry and SDOs in driving future technology developments. In 2016, IEEE Standards Education launched the IEEE Standards University (ISU). Customization of standards education may be part of new ISU strategy moving forward, e.g., customization to meet regional needs; could be industrial and/or corporate needs, too.

Roundtable 1: Collaboration of academia & industry in SDOs IEEE offers the ability for any individual to attend meetings and contribute/learn about technology that is being standardized. In IEEE, academia is able to attend and contribute to IEEE standards development working groups. Academia can contribute to standards setting and help shape the world of standards covering areas of common interest through: Participation Research Document contributions

Roundtable 1: Collaboration of academia & industry in SDOs Contributions from academics to the development of international standards can be encouraged by: Welcoming new participants into the process. Supporting processes that are open and transparent. Individuals from academia have the ability to publish their materials and then grant license to IEEE for use in standards development. On a related note, IEEE publishes the names of its working group members in the front matter of IEEE standards. Academia could look to influence their review boards into recognizing these efforts towards their publishing requirements, as applicable.

What Is Standards Education? Educating Students About standards and their critical role in the workforce and society Influencing Curricula For the inclusion of technical standards into university classes and curricula Assisting Professors Providing resources to facilitate the incorporation of standards topics into their courses Assisting Students Providing resources to help with inclusion of technical standards into their coursework, including grants Teaching Open Standards To provide understanding of the intersection of economics, technology, and politics Delivering Technical Content About specific areas of technical standardization

IEEE Standards University A Multi-track Educational Platform Take a Class (MOOC) Library Apply for a Grant Watch Videos Go to a Work-shop E-Magazine Play a Game Who benefits from IEEE Standards University? • Educators • Students • Engineers • Technologists • Business professionals • Lawyers • Economists • And anyone with an interest in standards What can be expected from IEEE Standards University? • Better understanding of the value and impact of standards in business • Practical understanding of the standards and innovation process • Improved teamwork and collaborative skills • Enhanced understanding of standards in fields such as electrical and electronics engineering • Marketable skills for both students and professionals www.StandardsUniversity.org

How Standards Participation Benefits Career Growth Participation in standards development is key to growing technology leadership within an organization In a region, builds the community (e.g., education, lifestyle) Growth in technology leadership leads to growth of the industry Presence in global forums is critical to establish and sustain successful growth of industry in technology sectors Technology growth Contributing and participating in standards development has direct and indirect benefits Enables the development of thought leadership in the region Individuals develop technology skills as well as soft skills Various ways of contributing to standards Observers Contributors Drivers/Leaders
