6 A Bit of History American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) was founded in 1884 –Focused on electric power and wired communications The Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) was founded in 1912 –Focused on radio/wireless communication, electrical amplification, and then electronics The two societies merged in 1963 to form the IEEE Currently celebrating our 125 th Anniversary

7 IEEE - the World’s Largest Technical Professional Society Over 382K members - Including 85,000 students - In over 160 countries ~ 1,400 Student Branches 324 Sections 38 Societies, 7 Technical Councils Over 1,600 Chapters A professional staff of ~ 1,000 Offices in NY, NJ, CA, Washington DC, Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing

Annually sponsors and co-sponsors over 900 conferences worldwide Publishes over 30% of the world’s literature in electrical and electronics engineering, computing and related technologies – 144 journals and magazines – 17 of the top 20 journals in our field Has over 1.8 million documents in Xplore – Being added at a rate of ~ 15K/month Strong focus on education Offers over 900 active industry standards
