The Sick Man of Europe Background~ The Muslim Ottoman Empire stretched from Hungary in the north, around the Black Sea, and across Egypt all the way west to the borders of Morocco. However, during the last 300 years there were many factors leading to a steady decline; making it ripe for European imperialism. Today we will look at 5 major factors.

2. Rise of Nationalism Inspired groups within the Ottoman Empire to fight for self rule Use pg.786 and list two of the groups which fight for their independence from the Ottoman Empire. The growing weakness of the Empire became very apparent to European powers by 1830.

World powers soon formed alliances in order to gain control of the Ottoman Empire.

Muhammad Ali’s desire to modernize Egypt led to the construction of the Suez Canal under his grandson Isma’il directions. The expensive project was funded by the French and built by Egyptian workers. When Egypt ran into problems paying for the construction Britain insisted on overseeing financial control of the canal. Leading to the British occupation of Egypt in 1882.
