NAFC Marine Centre Shetland School of Nautical Studies

Modern Apprenticeship - Deck Rating Starting May 2017 for two years. Intention to offer this programme annually and tailor to industry requirements. We are delighted to be starting our first deck rating apprenticeship next month. We will be working closely with interested companies to ensure that the programme is tailored to their operational needs, and hope to start with a new batch of apprentices annually.

Modern Apprenticeship - Engine Room Rating Intention to offer this within the next few months subject to industry demand. In conjunction with offering the deck rating apprenticeship, we are also in discussions with interested companies about starting an engineering apprenticeship in the coming months. Again, it would be our intention to offer this annually subject to demand.

Engineering Cadetship HNC programme starting in September 2017. Traditional five phase programme. As we have done for the past few years, we will be running our annual intake of engineering cadets from September 2017. Given the changes happening at various colleges, we took the decision to continue with the existing programme layout for 2017/18 and to look at making changes based on the needs of our students and the companies that we work with for the next intake.

Deck Cadetship HNC/D programme starting in September 2017.

Courses that feed in to the Cadet Programme… Skills for Work – Maritime and Engineering (14-16yr olds) Foundation Apprenticeship Engineering (16-18yr olds) National Certificate Engineering Practice We see a strong yearly trend in students progressing from these courses on to our cadet programme. Their time attending the NAFC gives them the opportunity to see what it is all about, and speak to current cadets. We are keen to put these students in touch with companies and to ensure a smooth transition on the cadetships for those students who have show themselves to be interested and well suited to a career at sea.

HND Nautical Science Top Up Course 11 students started in January, aim to complete October 2017. All college based, but month in/month at work basis. Intention to offer again in 2018, with any amendments based on student/company feedback. We started the first HND that we have run for several years in January this year with 11 students, many of whom are ex NAFC cadets. They are at college on a month on/month off basis, allowing them to fit the course around their work commitments. They should complete their qualification in October 2017, and we will be looking to offer another HND in Nautical Science during 2018.

HND Marine Engineering Top Up Course We are currently developing the HND in Marine Engineering and, subject to the necessary approvals, we aim to be able to offer both an HND Engineering cadetship and an HND top up course in 2018/19. Under development – intention to offer in 2018/19.

MCA Approved Engine Course We are now offering AEC courses. Flexibility can be offered with dates based on customer demand.

STCW Short Courses Before end 2017: Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention 2018: Advanced Fire Fighting PSC+RB Fast Rescue Boat Course ALL FULL COURSES AND REFRESHERS AVAILABLE IN SHETLAND BEFORE END 2018. We are very excited to be able to share with you the fact that work is well under way to provide all of the STCW short courses in Shetland. The first course that we hope to offer between September and December this year will be the Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention course. By the end of 2018, our aim is that no seafarer will have to leave Shetland to get access to a safety course that they require. We hope that this will also further strengthen the apprenticeships and cadet programmes on offer at NAFC Marine Centre.

Developments Dedicated Workshop Instructors. State-of-the-art GMDSS exam suite. Improved Pneumatics and Hydraulics facilities. Upgraded Bridge Simulator. We now have in place two dedicated workshop instructors who have comprehensive experience in shore-based engineering. We have recently installed the latest Transas touch screen GMDSS exam suite. Our Pneumatics and Hydraulics facilities have been upgraded in preparation for the upcoming changes in the HNC Marine Engineering. Our bridge simulation software has been updated to the latest Transas technology and graphics. We have also replaced our ECDIS screens to improve student experience.
