Me and my school  Year R Term 1 Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Learning each other’s names. Talking about ourselves and the things that are special to us. Establishing classroom rules, expectations and routines. Choosing and directing own learning. Talking about emotions – things that make us happy and sad. Getting involved in different classroom activities and small group activities. Physical Development: Getting changed in and out of school uniform and into PE kit. Action songs and rhymes. Mark making and holding pencils and pens effectively. Fine motor activities – using a variety of resources such as playdough, tweezers etc. Gross motor skills – Riding bikes, climbing on the apparatus. Being independent when using the toilet, washing hands and following hygiene procedures. Communication and Language: Sharing ideas in a one-to-one and small group situation. Listening skills – playing games from Letters and Sounds. Following instructions. Inviting other children to join in play, asking questions and building on what they say. Joining in with classroom activities, songs and rhymes. Playing together and sticking at an activity. Me and my school  Mathematics: Counting in order. Number recognition – 1-10. Investigating numbers, finding them in the environment. Counting sets of objects, knowing the total. Making sets of objects – counting out from a larger set. Number games – Spotty Dogs, Ladybirds. Singing number songs and rhymes. Using positional language – in, on under, behind etc. 2D shape recognition – using them to make pictures and models. Labelling them. Ordering objects and children by height. Sequencing events – during the day. Literacy: Daily Read and Feed – sharing a story. Recognising words that rhyme. Segmenting words into sounds and blending them together. Phonics: Listening games (phase 1) and beginning to learn initial sounds (phase 2) Mark making and play writing. Sharing picture books and getting to know the Oxford Reading Tree family. Talking about what is happening in the pictures, making predictions about what might happen next. Recognising and writing our names. Sharing stories about starting school and families e.g. Harry and the Dinosaurs, The Large Family. Sharing information books about Harvest and All about me. Understanding the World: Using construction to create models of houses and homes. Getting to know the school, environment and teachers. Going on local welly walks and collecting objects of interest. Labelling parts of the body. Discovering things by using our senses. Playing games on the computers – listening games. Draw pictures of our homes and families. Harvest time – being thankful. Celebrating. RE Unit of work – Feeling that we belong. Expressive Arts and Design: Singing nursery rhymes and simple songs. Free Painting – range of colours, paper sizes and tools. Role play – home corner. Exploring different sounds that musical instruments make. Finger and hand painting. Using different media to create self portraits. Cutting and sticking – who lives in your house? Making pictures. Making rubbings of things found out and about Creating collages using natural objects. Colour mixing and shading. Year R Term 1
