How to make a Shoe: Lesson 13

Who can work out which we used in our project and why? Connector: For a positive point who can explain what the words net and pattern mean? Who can work out which we used in our project and why? Net= A template for a regular shape e.g. square, rectangle. (flat edges are attached) Pattern= A template for an irregular shape e.g. circle (edges are not attached)

Learning Objective All will sew their whole shoe together. Most will start to sew on their beads or sequins. Few will use the running stitch to decorate.

Big Picture Connector/Discussion: Describe the key words. Demonstration: Individual time to; 1) Finish sewing shoe shapes together to make shoe. 2) Sew beads, sequins to shoe. 3) Embroider shoe with the running stitch. Review: Peer assess shoes (PMI).

How to make a Shoe? 1) Line the edges of the toe shape on the big end of the shoe sole and start sewing. 2) Line the edges of the heel shape on the small end of the shoe sole and start sewing. 3) Thread the needle through the centre of the sequin and over 1 side of the sequin. 4) Thread the needle back through the centre of the sequin and then over opposite side of the sequin. 5) Thread the needle through the centre of the bead and then back through the fabric. 6) To use the running stitch push your needle down into the felt and up again in 1 movement to make 1 stitch.

Mid Review Have I... Made my stitches neat (the same size and space apart)? Sewn my cut out shapes to the correct part of the shoe sole? Cut out the fabric sewn onto my shoe neatly with no jagged edges? Could I change the edges so they have a creative edge (wavey, zig zag cut edge)? Sewn on my beads or sequins with small and neat stitches so the thread cannot be easily seen? Sewn on my beads or sequins tightly so they are secure and not falling off?

I= 3) Improvement: Explain how!! Review: PEER ASSESSMENT: In your friends sketchbook. PMI your partners shoe P= 1) Positive Comment: I like... because... M= 2) Minus Comment: I do not like...because... I= 3) Improvement: Explain how!! To improve they could...

How to prepare Felt Place your work back into your folder for safety, keep all scrap from your made felt for later design work.

Review: (Quick Fire Questions) For a positive point who can... Explain what a net is? Net= A template for a regular shape e.g. square, rectangle. (flat edges are attached) 2)Explain what a pattern is? Pattern= A template for an irregular shape e.g. circle (edges are not attached) 3)What is positive about using a net in design and making? Quick to sew together as most the edges are already attached. What is negative about a net in design and making? The shape of the design has to be a regular straight edged shape. The attached edges, when folded in fabric do not come out as a perfect right angles and appear curved. 5)What is positive about using a pattern in design and making? The shape can be anything you want it to be, which is most useful in clothing and shoe design. 6) What is negative about using a pattern in design and making? There are more edges to sew together and a more complicated shape to design which means design and making takes longer before you are able to sell.
