2 Let’s get familiar with the
Pattern envelope! Refer to the patterns in your groups as we go over what is included in a clothing pattern, and what information is available on a pattern envelope. What pattern you have Fabric suggestions Body Measurements Required yardage Notions Finished garment measurements

3 Pattern Basics 1. What is the grain line on a piece of fabric? Why is it important to cut fabric on the grain? There are two grain lines on a piece of fabric, the cross wise and the length wise grain. The grain lines run at a 90 degree angle to each other. When the grain is straight, meaning that the threads are running straight and not skewed through the fabric, the pieces that you cut for your garment will be straight and won’t twist when you wear or wash the fabric as a garment. 2. On a pattern piece, a grain line symbol looks like this Every pattern piece will have a grain line marked upon it unless the fabric is to be cut on the fold. You must line up all pattern pieces on the grain!

4 Pattern Basics 3. What is the bias line on a piece of fabric?
The bias line is the line located 45 degrees diagonal to either grain of the fabric. 4. The tightly woven edge on a piece of fabric is referred to as what? What is this edge parallel to? The selvage edge. The selvage edge is parallel to the lengthwise grain. 5. The grain line symbol found on pattern pieces should always be pinned to the fabric Parallel to the selvage.

5 Pattern Symbols and Terminology

6 Pattern Symbols and Terminology
6. What does a triangle symbol on a pattern piece indicate? Why is this symbol helpful? The triangle symbol indicates that you must put a notch in the fabric. Notches are helpful for when you are sewing a garment together because they help you match up fabric pieces correctly Clipped notch 7. What does a cut on the fold symbol look like? What does it tell you to do? Cut that particular pattern piece on the fold line of the fabric.

7 9. To correctly pin a pattern piece to the fabric, the pins should be:
Pattern Symbols and Terminology 8. What does a dart symbol look like on a pattern piece? How is a dart correctly marked and sewn? A dart needs to be marked to the fabric like the long triangle sketch found on the pattern piece using tailor’s chalk. Once marked, a dart is sewn by folding the triangle in half right sides together. The dart is sewn by starting at the point of the dart up to the triangle’s far corners. 9. To correctly pin a pattern piece to the fabric, the pins should be: Be parallel to the cutting point.

8 Pattern Layout on fabric
10. Diagrams for pattern layouts are found inside the pattern envelope on the instruction page.

9 Sewing with a printed fabric
11. When using a one-way design fabric you may need to purchase more fabric than the pattern calls for 12. When using a one-way design patterned fabric, the pattern pieces must all face the same direction
