Using high-definition video, they have gained a better understanding of the inner structure of a tornado—information that will help meteorologists trying to interpret weather radar images. A researcher in Middlebury College is investigating the use and chemistry of clay minerals with a goal of using these materials to remove contaminants from wastewater. The process has the potential to be more efficient than current methods of pollution removal. NSF-funded research at the University of Vermont & State Agricultural College utilizes data collected from social media to predict inherently hard-to-predict social phenomena, such as career choices of recent college graduates. Courtesy: www.research.gov/seeinnovation INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN VERMONT Vermont awards the most bachelor’s degrees in science, engineering, and technology of any other state.1 As of 2014, more than 13,000 Vermont residents work in science and engineering occupations. 1 Academic institutions in Vermont were granted 43 patents from 2003-2013. 1 In 2015, Vermont had more than 23,000 high tech jobs—9% of the state’s workforce. Vermont received over $1 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN VERMONT The NSF-funded Robert Noyce Scholarship Program at the University of Vermont recruits STEM professionals and prepares them to become teachers. Noyce Scholars also collaborate with engineering students to create service learning projects for high schoolers. Bennington College will offer a new interdisciplinary course, “Hoosick Falls Water Crisis,” to give undergraduates a hands-on education on a local real-time issue with the public water system with the goal of meaningful engagement with a STEM field. The University of Vermont has created a summer neuroscience research fellowship, through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. To address the difficulties that students with learning disabilities face when joining the workforce in STEM fields, Landmark College is creating The Access to Innovative Education project to offer support in the form of scholarships and mentoring to students with learning disabilities.
