B. Body Paragraphs Gives the expanded information 1 point per body paragraph Includes details, examples, quotes, etc. related to the topic and point Uses APES/ ACES structure

1. Assertion (Topic of the Body Paragraph) First sentence Introduces the point of the paragraph Thesis with only one support Example: Thesis: The life of the typical college student is characterized by time spent studying, attending class, and socializing with peers. (Purdue Owl) Topic Sentence: Due to the rigor of classwork, college students often spend great amounts of time studying and preparing in between classes.

2. Proof/Citation An example that backs up assertion A quote, fact, plot reference, or example NOT opinion At least 2 per paragraph If stuck, start with for example, who said the quote, or where originated Example: For instance, professors often expect students to come to class prepared to discuss which is why they give a reading list.

3. Extensions/Explanations 2 sentences per proof E1-Explains the meaning of the proof/citation sentence E2-Connects the proof back to the assertion and thesis Comes from brain! Example: Since students have to know material before class, they must spend time reading and covering materials on their own time. If they do not spend this time, then they will be unable to participate during class.

4. Sum-up (Concluding Sentence) Last sentence of paragraph Wraps up the paragraph Smooth transition to the next paragraph or topic Example: Making sure that you are prepared is just one element that takes up the time of a college student.

Sum it up Overall, each will have at least 8 sentences Assertion Proof 1 Extension 1 Extension 2 Proof 2 Concluding Sentence

All Together Due to the rigor of classwork, college students often spend great amounts of time studying and preparing in between classes. For instance, professors often expect students to come to class prepared to discuss which is why they give a reading list. Since students have to know material before class, they must spend time reading and covering materials on their own time. If they do not spend this time, then they will be unable to participate during class. Students also have assignments that are more involved than those from high school. Many professors assign papers and projects that require research about topics related to the course. In order to do proper research, students have to read complicated text, engage in online discuss, and perhaps conduct data searching experiments or interviews, and these all along with actually putting the product together result in many hours of outside work for the student. Without doing either, students will end up with lower scores. Making sure that you are prepared is just one element that takes up the time of a college student.
