Different Strokes for Different Folks Miranda Prestly “Leadership” Robert Irvine “Dinner Impossible” Management Styles- Just like all people are different so are all managers. Different managers will use different methods for accomplishing the tasks that are required of them and their organization in order to be successful.

Autocratic Manager One who gives direct, clear, and precise ORDERS Provides detailed instructions as to what, when, and how work is to be done Employee decision making is limited Autocratic Manager – one who gives direct clear and precise ORDERS with detailed instructions and as to what, when, and how work is to be done. Employees decision making is limited. There is little or no personal involvement in the work itself.

Autocratic Management Advantages Disadvantages Managers assume that workers do not have knowledge or skills necessary to plan and carry out work. Discourages workers from thinking about better ways to do things Many employees don’t respond well Efficient Employees have clear expectations of what is expected Great during emergencies Some employees prefer it

Democratic Leader Person in charge offers workers an opportunity to become involved in the decision making process. More preferred than the Autocratic method

Democratic Management Advantages Disadvantages Not all employees want to be involved Time Consuming Produces highly motivated employees and need not be as closely controlled or supervised. Works well with experienced or well trained employees

Laissez-faire leaders Leaders who leave the actual decision making up to employees

Laissez Faire Management Advantages Disadvantages Traditionally the “boss” still takes the fall if employees don’t follow through Time Consuming Allows anyone to become the “boss” Works well for people who work from home

Open Leadership Any employee may become the leader based on rational circumstances Workers concentrate on their individual tasks and are not involved in the tasks of others Best with experienced workers in business where there is little or no change Home based workers Specialists

Situational Leadership The most effective manager is the one who selects a leadership style that best fits a particular situation.
