The fastest growing indoor sport on the Planet! Floorball The fastest growing indoor sport on the Planet!

1. Introduction Floorball is the fastest growing indoor sport in the world with over millions of players Floorball will enrich the current offerings of any PE curriculum or after school programme Floorball can be easily learnt and played by all ages It is an ideal sort for boys and girls school groups. All age groups can play together Floorball is a safer version of hockey sports and can be played all year round in any school gym Floorball is fun and inexpensive

2. What is Floorball? Floorball is similar to Field Hockey; however, it is played with advanced lightweight sticks and rules that make the game much safer To play at schools – Floorball only requires sticks, balls and some cones Teams consist of up to 20 players – 5 field players and a goalie are out on the field at one time (for school or recreational play, no goalie is needed – play with an open net for more scoring) No protective gear is needed, because the rules are designed with safety first in mind and all equipment is lightweight and easy to control Floorball can be played anywhere there is a smooth surface – inside or outdoors - exercise all year round

3. Floorball facts Floorball is played by millions of people in over 50 countries around the world. There are more Floorball players than field/ice hockey players in Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Floorball is becoming more popular in New Zealand and there are three NZ teams – men´s, women´s and U19 men´s team. In many European countries, Floorball is part of the school curriculum.

4. Floorball in New Zealand The epicentre of floorball in NZ in 2015 is Wellington. In New Zealand the sport is still relatively new and the Wellington Club is the biggest floorball Club in this country. Wellington have over 140 teams and more than 1000 players. They are organising succesful school leagues, social leagues and Wellington floorball leagues. Teams are U10, U15, U19, Womens league and several grades of Mens leagues. Other floorball areas are Hamilton, Palmerston North, Upper Hutt, Christchurch and Dunedin. The Wellington Open Floorball Tournament has been held annually since 2008 and is the biggest and longest running Floorball Tournament in New Zealand. The winner of this tournament becomes the New Zealand Floorball Champion.

5. Rules No stick interference Cannot swing stick or hit the ball above the knees No foot passes to a teammate Cannot touch the ball with your hands or head (except goalies) Cannot put your stick between an opponents legs No jumping to play the ball No entry to a small goalie area for all players (except goalie)

6. Incorporating Floorball at School Physical education classes Appropriate for any age years– primary, middle or high schools. Boys and girls can play together. Excellent cardiovascular conditioning. Improves hand-eye coordination and overall athleticism. Afterschool Perfect way to keep kids active during after-care programmes! Many schools have summer sports programme. Floorball is ideal! Interschool competitions A great sport that fosters cooperation and team play. Form teams for inter-school and district play. Consider using floorball as an excellent fund-raising activity

7. Suggestions for School/PE and Group play 5 or 6 players per team (no formal goalie or goalie) Use smaller, official Goals or cones to create goals – bigger scoring area for younger ages. Play 3 forwards, 2 Defence and 1 Goal Position (rotate with other field players) – goal position uses stick and plays as 3rd defenceman Free substitution or rotate players as desired No offside rules Consider cross-court games to increase participation at younger ages

8. Auckland Floorball Academy The Auckland Floorball Academy was established in 2015 and is proud to introduce the first ever Floorball League in Auckland. We are offering school competitions, coaching, training and team competitions. We would like to offer kids, adults and seniors a sport that's fun and competitive for all playing abilities.
