2. HISTORY Team handball is an Olympic sport gaining popularity in recreational and school Physical Education classes. Participants and spectators alike enjoy the fast continuous play, using their natural athletic skills of running, jumping, throwing and catching. Team Handball had its origins in Europe in the late 1920’s. A men's team Handball competition was included in the Munich Olympics in 1972, followed by the inclusion of women's competition in the 1976 Games in Montreal.

4. SAFETY Team Handball players need to wear proper athletic shoes and clothing. Players need to be aware of all surroundings making sure to not come into contact with another player. Make sure Team Handball court is free of debris. Practice proper communication and good listening.

5. HOW TO PLAY There are 6 court players and 1 goalie. Game begins with a center throw-off, aka, throw-on determined by a coin toss. Regulation game length is 2-30 minute halves. A player scores by shooting the ball into a goal. Each goal is worth 1 point. Change of possession every time a team scores. Team with the most points wins when time expires. 3-3-3 Rule- 3 steps with ball, 3 dribbles, 3 seconds holding the ball

6. TEAM HANDBALL COURT Penalty Shot/Free throw Goal-area line Free Throw - A throw given to the other team when they are in violation of a rule of the game Penalty Line - Line for free throw after a major penalty, creates one-on-one with goalie. Goal Area Line- Arc (usually 6m out) around goal that only the goalie can be in. Players may jump into area to shoot, provided they shoot before landing. VideoVideo clip

7. PASSING CUES Throwing the ball to another player to advance the ball down the court. 1.Side to the target 2.Step with opposite foot 3. Twist 4. Throw

8. SHOOTING A scoring attempt made when a player releases a shot toward the goal. DEFENDING Trying to stop the other team from scoring using your body.

9. SHOOTING CUES 1.Grip ball so it rests in palm 2.Reach back and above shoulder 3.Snap wrist 4.Release the shot

10. DEFENDING CUES 1.Eyes on the ball or the attacker 2.Hands up 3.Place body between the attacker and the goal DEFENDER

11. CATCHING 8 th grade assessment Using hands and arms to grab the ball. In handball we pass and catch the ball with teammates to move closer to the goal and score a point.

12. GOAL When the ball crosses the goal line inside the goal. A goal may be scored from any throw. All goals are worth one point. Putting the ball back into play after it has crossed one of the sidelines. Feet must be outside of sideline and one or two hands used to throw. THROW IN

13. TYPES OF SHOTS POSITIONS GOALIE COURT PLAYER SET SHOT A simple shot thrown from a standing still position. This is the type of shot used during penalty shots. PENALTY SHOT One on one with the goalie. The shooter must stand with both feet behind the penalty line and keep one foot stationary during the shot. Member of the handball team actually playing on the court, except the goalie. The only player allowed in the goal area. The Goalie may defend in any way.
