Chamberlain in Foreign and Colonial Speeches, a primary source published in 1897, he believed that colonies were important to Great Britain because Africa was being “opened to civilization.” The author is ethnocentric and probably agrees with the famous poem by Rudyard Kipling, A White Man’s Burden. “ (D 1)
