Fractions are parts of a whole

The bottom number of a fraction shows how many equal parts in all 4 1 3 2 4 EQUAL PARTS IN ALL

The top number shows how many of the equal parts we are working with What fraction of the shape is blue ? What are the names of this fraction? One out of four or one fourth or one quarter

When you have all of the equal parts you have a whole or one = 1

Well, what does all this fraction stuff have to do with money ?

Sometimes we spend exactly whole dollars $ 3.00

Other times we spend parts (fractions) of a dollar $ . 25

Coins make it easy to spend parts of a dollar because….

Coins are Fractions (parts) of a Dollar ! Half Dollars

Coins are Fractions (parts) of a Dollar ! Quarters

Fractions! Fractions of a Dollar ! When we need to spend parts of a dollar, we can count on coins because they are Fractions! Fractions of a Dollar !

That way we don’t have to tear, rip, shred, chop, or saw the dollar bill into tiny little pieces !

Fun Fact A penny is worth just 1 / 100 of a dollar. But it weighs more!

What Did We Learn ? Why do we need coins? How is a coin like a fraction? What coin is ½ of a dollar? What coin is ¼ of a dollar ?
