1 Halves, Thirds and Fourths! Fraction Fantastic!

2 Let’s talk about halves!
Half Half Let’s talk about halves! This pizza is divided into two parts. When we divided something into two equal parts, we call each part a half.

3 Let’s Talk about Fractions
Half Let’s Talk about Fractions If I ate 1 half of the pizza, I could write this as a fraction. A fraction represents part of a whole. In this case I ate 1 out of the 2 parts.

4 How do I write a fraction?
Half How do I write a fraction? When I make my fraction I put the part on top. This is called the numerator. The number of parts goes on the bottom, this is called the denominator. So I ate 1 part, so the number 1 goes on top. There were 2 parts total, so the number 2 goes on the bottom. 1 Part Numerator 2 Denominator Number of Parts

5 Now Let’s Talk About Thirds!
This pizza is divided into three equal parts. We call each of these parts a third. Remember a fraction represents part of a whole. So if I ate one piece this pizza, I would eat one third of it. We can write this as a fraction. In the denominator I would put the number 3 because there are 3 pieces total. In the numerator I would put 1, because I ate 1 piece. 1 Part Numerator Denominator Number of Parts 3

6 Now Let’s Talk About Fourths!
This pizza is divided into four equal parts. We call each of these parts a fourth. Remember a fraction represents part of a whole. So if I ate one piece this pizza, I would eat one fourth of it. We can write this as a fraction. In the denominator I would put the number 4 because there are 4 pieces total. In the numerator I would put 1, because I ate 1 piece. 1 Part Numerator Denominator Number of Parts 4
