Nigeria Citizens Society and State Alberta Precaj & Ashley Welch

Political Participation According to observations there is little that Nigerian’s like about their political system. In the 1960’s studies show that Nigerian’s were proud of their country more than any other third world country citizens. When surveyed 68% of Nigerians believed that “democracy is preferable to any other kind of government”

Political Participation cont.. Different ethnic groups have a different take on politics in Nigeria. People who live in rural areas don’t tend to get involved in politics they usually just follow the initiatives of their local leaders. The people who live in the cities tend to very involved in politics who take a stand in any issue. The elite culture tend to also be involved in politics and don’t see themselves as apart of any ethnic, religious or regional group.

Revolutions/Social Movements Independence from England occurred because they were tired of being controlled by the English and since the British created the Nigerian elite and they realized that they were being controlled and decided to get independence. In July 2002 a group of Nigerian women protested in ChevronTexaco’s Nigerian operation for 10 days the protest ended when ChevronTexaco agreed to provide jobs for their sons and set up credit plans to help village women star businesses.

Revolutions/Social Movements cont.. Nigeria has many social rights groups they protested the abuses if the Babangida and Abacha regimens and also promote democratic reform. They hold demonstrations and protest. Nigeria is not yet a Democracy, but they are working towards it.

Citizenship and Representation The citizens of Nigeria are very divided they are divided between the Hausa north which are mostly Muslim. The Hausa-Falani: largest ethnicity group, live in the north and are mostly Orthodox Muslim. Yoruba: West of the Niger and Benue rivers most have converter to Christianity, but there are still some Muslims and Non-Christian minorities. Make 60-65% of the population and have produced many of the countries leading politicians. Middle belt: Located in the center, no single ethnic group or religion dominates. For representation they take turns selecting a different religious group for office every term.
