Bell Ringer Why did the colony of St. Domingue (Haiti) have the first of the Latin American Revolutions?

The Industrial Revolution Why did the Industrial Revolution begin in England?

The Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution was a long, slow, uneven process in which production shifted from simple hand tools to complex machines.

The Industrial Revolution Industrialization was made possible by: A second agricultural revolution A population explosion The development of new technology

The Second Agricultural Revolution Farming advancements -> increased food supply Rich landowners used enclosure, the process of taking over and fencing off land formerly shared by peasant farmers More food = more people

New Technologies New Technologies Thomas Newcomen developed the first steam engine -> improved upon by James Watt

Great Britain Leads the Way Britain had large supplies of coal and iron + large labor supply. A prosperous economy meant that the business class had capital, or money available for investment, and consumer goods were affordable to all.

Changes in the Textile Industry Before Industrialization textiles were produced at home (putting out system) As demand grew, inventions sped up the process dramatically Factories were places that brought together workers and machines to produce large quantities of goods.

Revolution in Transportation As production increased, people needed faster and cheaper methods of moving goods from place to place. Turnpikes (toll roads), canals, and stronger bridges helped to increase speed of travel Steam Locomotives / Railroads - Steamships / Canals
