1 The Industrial Revolution  Time period when the workplace moved from the home and farm to the factory.  What caused this?  1. Improved methods of farming  2. The population explosion  3. Energy invention – using water for power, steam engine, etc.

2 It all starts in England!  Why Britain?  1. Britain had many natural resources  2. Had a large work force (free to work now that many didn’t have to farm)  3. Britain had lots of economic power & $  4. Britain had a stable government & could support science & new industry

3 What were the 1 st Factories?  Textile mills for spinning cloth  Located near a water source for power  Later powered by steam engines  Greatly improved production time!

4 Improved Transportation?  Turnpikes – private roads that charged a fee to use them  Canals – to link waterways  Steam locomotive – to carry goods faster  Steam Boat – faster water transportation

5 How did this change the world?  Many inventors began to create numerous machines that sped up production  More goods & services were available – people began to live in a more relaxed lifestyle!  Industrialized countries became more wealthy & powerful than unindustrialized nations – the balance of world power began to shift. If you had factories you were powerful! If you didn’t, watch out!!!!
