ENERGY! Introduction Do you know what powers our vehicles, lights our cities, and warms our homes? Energy is all around us, and it comes in many forms. Even though energy is important, we often use much more than we need. There are so many ways to conserve energy that will not only save money, but save our planet, too! ENERGY!

Task The purpose of this webquest is to learn what energy is and how you can help conserve it. You will complete this webquest with a partner. As you complete the webquest, you will be able to answer the following questions: What is energy? What are the different types of energy? What are some things that require energy? What are some ways to conserve energy? How will you help conserve energy in your own life?

Process Throughout this webquest you will: Watch a video about energy Take a survey to determine your carbon footprint Explore various energy websites Play an energy game Create a commercial using Animoto showing how easy and important it is to conserve energy

Resources Watch this video to introduce you to the concept of energy! http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/energy/energysources/preview.weml

Resources Visit this website and answer the questions to determine your carbon footprint ! http://meetthegreens.pbskids.org/features/carbon-calculator.html

Resources Explore these websites to learn ways to conserve energy! http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=kids.kids_index http://www1.eere.energy.gov/kids/ http://www.tvakids.com/electricity/conservation.htm

Resources Complete the Hog Busters Training Camp game! http://www.energyhog.org/childrens.htm

Resources Use Animoto to create a commercial about the importance of energy conservation and ways people can conserve energy every day! http://animoto.com/

Students included at least 4 ways people can conserve energy as well as why saving energy is important. Good Animoto commercial with few spelling errors. Students included at least 3 ways people can conserve energy as well as why saving energy is important. Satisfactory Animoto commercial with several spelling errors. Students included fewer than 3 ways people can conserve energy as well as why saving energy is important. Unsatisfactory Animoto commercial with several spelling errors. Students did not include ways people can conserve energy or why saving energy is important. Students did not complete assignment.

Evaluation Continued Students will receive 2 additional points for each section completed below for a total of 12 points for this webquest: Completed Video Carbon Footprint Websites Visited Training Camp Game YES 2 NO

Conclusion At the conclusion of this webquest, each group will present their Animoto commercial with the rest of their class. Students will fill out an evaluation form for each video that has the same points system from the rubric. Make sure to make your video exciting!

Teacher Page This webquest was developed for a fourth grade science class. The students will have been taught how to use Animoto in a lesson prior to this webquest. The Animoto commercial will hold the most point value for the students as it is the concluding assignment after researching the topic. The students will also receive their own rubric so they know what to include in the assignment. This assignment should take 4-5 classes in a 40 minute class period. Extra time may be needed to show all Animoto commercials.
