Any new words this week? Term 2 Wellbeing WALT: understand SPECS WILF: I can understand the difference aspects of wellbeing and improve my wellbeing Any new words this week? Slide 2 Read WALT and WILF Have there been any new words added to our list. Add these words to your list

SPECS Wellbeing Pie This term we will talk about: Every slice of a pie is important to make a complete meal. What ingredients do you have in each slice of your wellbeing pie? Slide 3 Revise Wellbeing Pie. We need to have good ingredients in all pieces of the pie. Revise the ingredients from last week Every aspect of wellbeing is important to make us feel complete and well. What ingredients do you need to add to each slice of your pie?

Which of the SPECS are we looking at today? Today we are focusing on the P in SPECS, which stands for PHYSICAL Slide 4 General discussion about the pie. What did we look at last time? Today we are looking at physical

PHYSICAL – another wellbeing aspect What does the word ‘physical’ mean? Think, share pair  Discuss your findings with the class from each pair Add some of these answers to your wellbeing wordchart Slide 5 Physical is all about our bodies. Physical wellbeing is about doing lots of things to look after our bodies. It is about keeping fit, enjoying activities and participating. Do some exercises like star jumps to get the blood flowing

1. Physical wellbeing means: EXERCISE Some years ago the government was very concerned that people were not doing enough exercise. Why would the government care? Discuss A program called ‘Life Be in It’ was developed and shown on TV. It was based on a character called Norm who was very lazy and just liked to sit around all day and watch TV while eating junk food. Life Be In It Here is an example: Walking How much walking do you do? Could you do more? When? Slide 6 Why would the Govt care about our health and fitness A program called ‘Life Be in It’ was developed and shown on TV. It was based on a character called Norm who was very lazy and just liked to sit around all day and watch TV while eating junk food. Watch clip Watch walking clip How much walking do you do? Could you do more? When?

Physical Wellbeing: Why Exercise? Exercise keeps our bodies healthy and also builds our wellbeing How does exercise keep us healthy? Discuss other ways we can do more physical activities (exercise). Participate in life Slide 7 Discuss how exercise takes care of our bodies Increases oxygen to all parts of our bodies: lungs, heart, brain, muscles Build muscles Makes our heart strong so it can work properly Reduces stress by releasing good hormones ie; natural chemicals that make us feel good Makes us hungry Helps keep our weight at a healthy level Often involves being with other people e.g. social wellbeing Exercise. What is exercise. Brainstorm all the exercise things that can make us healthy Watch the Norm video

2. Physical Wellbeing means: DIET What does the word ‘Diet’ mean? Which foods are good for our bodies? Which foods are bad for our bodies? Think, share pair  Norm and Obesity Slide 8 Connected to our Nutrition lessons Can you give an example of: What foods are good for our bodies What foods are bad for our bodies Watch the Norm video.

Physical Wellbeing: Why eat a balanced diet? Eating good food keeps our bodies healthy and also builds our wellbeing. Food is like a fuel. What would happen to our car if we put the wrong petrol in it? How does eating healthy foods keep our bodies healthy? What foods do you eat? How could you make better choices? The MORE or LESS diet Slide 9 Discuss reasons for eating healthy foods Prevents diseases and sickness Helps us get better when we get sick Rebuilds muscles Gives us energy

3. Physical Wellbeing means: SLEEP Think of a time when you were really tired. Describe how you felt to a partner. Did you feel differently after a sleep? How? Why do we need sleep? Why do we want to sleep a lot when we are sick? Why do we need to sleep? Can you come up with some rules about sleep? Slide 10 Tell a story about being tired at the end of the year. Gather some examples from the class. How did you feel etc 2 minute partner chat. When were you so tired you couldn’t think properly? Why do we need sleep? Gives our brains a rest from taking in new information Gives our brains time to remember information Allows our bodies to relax and mend any problems

Physical wellbeing: What are some helpful suggestions about sleep? 1. Get lots of sleep! Children 6-11 years need 9 – 11 hours each night. How much sleep do you get? 2. Get technology out of the bedroom! Light from devices stops our bodies from making chemicals (melatonin) that allows us to sleep. 3. Have a regular sleep routine Same time every night, same routine e.g. bath, story Slide 11 1. Get lots of sleep! Children 6-11 years need 9 – 11 hours each night. How much sleep do you get? 2. Slide 13 WALT: Identify important aspects of physical wellbeing Reflect on our own physical wellbeing WILF: Ideas to improve own physical wellbeing In groups, brainstorm what you learnt last lesson about one of the things that are needed for physical wellbeing: exercise, diet or sleep. Share with the class

Physical Wellbeing = Exercise + Diet + Sleep What happens if one of these aspects is left out? Class discussion: groups of 3 1 student is exercise 1 student is diet 1 student is sleep Which is the most important or are they all needed for our wellbeing Slide 14 What happens if one of these aspects is left out? Class discussion. Allow children to discuss one being left out. Groups of 3. Children could be a physical aspect each. I’m sleep and without me you would get very sick. Decide which one is most important or is it everything in moderation? Drama time. Arguments about why I (sleep, exercise or diet) am so important. Hopefully children we see that all three are needed
