Helpful Hints for SATs A Guide for parents

What are SATs? SATs are Statutory Assessment Tests (National Curriculum Tests) for all 10 and 11 year olds across England. All school results are made public. At 11 years old, children are expected to achieve the standard in mathematics, reading, writing and grammar, punctuation and spelling.

The tests must be taken on the scheduled day. Monday 8th English Reading Test 9 am 1 hour. Tuesday 9th English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. 45 minutes. Spellings 10.15 15 minutes. Wednesday 10th Mathematics Paper 1 – Arithmetic. 30 minutes. Mathematics Paper 2 – Reasoning 11.30 40 minutes. Thursday 11th Mathematics Paper 3 – Reasoning

Writing Assessment Towards expected standard. Working at the expected standard. Working at greater depth within the expected standard.

Test outcomes Scaled score of 100 will be the expected standard. This will be set nationally after the pupils have taken the test. Results will be presented as working towards or working at the expected standard. You will also be given a scaled score somewhere between 80 and 120. We will receive their results shortly before reports are sent home and the information should be included with those.

The Reading Test One hour – children can read the text and questions in their own time. Children read through a booklet with different types of writing. They answer a range of questions carrying different amounts of marks. The test is, generally, in order of difficulty.

Grammar Punctuation and Spelling Test The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test assesses your child’s English skills in four key areas in Year 6. Spelling Grammar Punctuation Vocabulary The grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test is 45 minutes long. The spelling test is around 15 minutes and read aloud by the class teacher.

The Maths Test Your child will have 3 tests. Arithmetic test paper 1 (30 minutes). Mathematics paper 2 (40 minutes). Mathematics paper 3 (40 minutes). Children are provided with a pencil, ruler, protractor and mirror.

How to help during SATs week… Ensure that your child is on time for school. Ensure they have a good breakfast. Ensure they have plenty of sleep each night. Phone the school as soon as possible if you are running late or your child is ill. We will look after them. We promise. We will provide some energy-boosting snacks before the tests and have fun, relaxing activities planned for the afternoons. Encourage and reassure.

Any questions?
