About UMSL Career Services Career Services assists students and recent graduates with planning, creating, implementing, and evaluating career development and job search strategies. We work with students and graduates from all majors & degree programs.

We can help you: Make sense of the American internship & job search process. Prepare materials, including an American style resume & cover letter. Get ready for interviews and follow up. Find and apply for internship & job postings. Appointments encouraged; walk in hours Monday – Thursday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Job Searching in the United States Resumes in the U.S. may be different from CVs in your home country. Short (one page if possible) Do not include personal information Targeted: present information relevant to the position for which you are applying. We have many sample resumes on our webpage, http://careers.umsl.edu.

Job Searching in the United States Interviewing in the U.S. may also differ You are expected to talk about your accomplishments, show you are familiar with the company, and to persuade the employer that you are the best candidate. Nonverbal communication is important—firm handshake, eye contact. Job seekers in the United States also use many methods of finding a job.

Networking Participate in student Common advice for finding a job in the U.S.: “most jobs are found through networking.” What does networking mean? Some examples: Participate in student groups, get involved on the UMSL campus. Join professional organizations. Attend UMSL Internship & Job Fair and Career Events. Anywhere where you can have a conversation about your professional goals.

Networking at a Career Fair UMSL Internship & Job Fair: Friday, September 23, 2016, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Mark Twain Building What is the purpose of a career fair? Gain information about employers. Learn about internship & job opportunities in your major. Attend the Internship/Job Fair Success Employer Panel on Tuesday, September 20 at 3:30 p.m. in the SGA Chambers for more information.

Networking at a Career Fair What to Expect at the Fair

What to Expect at a Career Fair A busy day: Over 100 organizations. Several hundred job seekers. Company representatives stand or sit at tables arranged in rows. Check in at the front of the building Will receive a map. Find employers of interest, talk with employers of lesser interest first to gain a sense of what to expect.

What NOT to Expect at a Career Fair At a career/job fair, do NOT expect: A chance to submit applications or resumes. An interview that day. Immediate results . . . Attending a fair is part of a long term process. The value of the fair is in the personal connection, learning something you can’t find out online.

Research for the Career Fair Research employers; use resources such as: The organization’s web site. Going Global (on the Career Services website). www.myvisajobs.com. Can the employer hire international students? Research yourself. What are you seeking? An internship? Job? In what area? Know your status . . . How are you able to work for an employer as an international student?

What You’ll Need for a Career Fair A Resume Many ways Career Services can help you get your resume ready, including Resume Reviews in the Nosh September 14, 15, 19 & 20 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Nosh Bring more copies than you think you will need Dress Professionally Bring a portfolio

Talking to Employers at a Career Fair A Quick Conversation Expect to spend 2 to 5 minutes per employer Introduction example: Hello, my name is Julio Chavez. I am working on a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. I am active with several organizations on the UMSL campus and am on the planning committee for the International Business Career Conference. I have helped the IBCC design their website. I am looking for an internship in marketing. Can you tell me more about your organization’s internship opportunities?

Talking to Employers at a Career Fair Breaking down the introduction: Greeting: Hello, my name is Julio Chavez. Background: I am working on a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. I am active with several organizations on the UMSL campus and am on the planning committee for the International Business Career Conference. Unique skill: I have helped the IBCC design their website. Posing a question: I am looking for an internship in marketing. Can you tell me more about your organization’s internship opportunities? Julio Chavez BSBA, Marketing

Talking to Employers at a Career Fair Closing the conversation: Before leaving, ask for a business card and the best way to follow up with them If do not have a business card, write down their contact information What if the employer is not able to hire international students? Person attending the career fair does not have control over this policy; now is not the time to discuss it with them. What about communicating my visa status? Consider the best time to do so. What if the employer cannot hire international students?
