SKILLS STRATEGY

THE NATIONAL SKILLS PICTURE A slowly improving economy Increasing employment rate but youth unemployment remains too high Increased drive for devolution and for that to include skills Reviewing and reshaping of post-16 provision with a drive to specialise A ‘skills emergency’ Increasing effectiveness, simplicity and localisation of the Adult Education Budget 3m Apprenticeships by 2020

COAST TO CAPITAL EMPLOYMENT FORECAST Number of jobs predicted to rise by 45,000 between 2012-2022 (ambition 60,000) Private sector expected to contribute 99% to net job growth between 2012-2022 45% of employment is in the three high skilled occupational groups: managers, professionals and associate professionals (+65,000 by 2022 of which 66% women) 31% of jobs are in the middle ranking occupations of administration, skilled trades and caring/leisure roles (-31,000 by 2022 but still significant source of employment)

COAST TO CAPITAL EMPLOYMENT FORECAST 23% of employment is in sales or customer service, plant/process operatives and elementary roles Leading sources of job growth forecast to be professional services (+10,000), support services (+7,000), information technology (+7,000) and construction (+6,000) Replacement demands will contribute around eight times as many job openings as net job growth over the next decade: 369,000 openings compared with 45,000

The Coast to Capital Skills Picture Low Average Earnings Talented residents lost to neighbouring labour markets Technological changes requiring technical skills Productivity growth will require higher level skills Ageing workforce, will need to draw on pool of 135,000 involuntarily inactive residents English and maths, STEM, Apprenticeships and ‘Employability’

SOME OF OUR PRIORITIES Higher level skills STEM, technical and professional skills Strong leadership and management Apprenticeship growth, particularly at Higher level, but must link to our Strategic Economic Plan and Skills Strategy English, maths and basic skills Reskilling of the older workforce Clear learning and career pathways Supporting a co-ordinated approach to careers guidance and employer engagement in enterprise education

ESF SKILLS SUPPORT FOR THE WORKFORCE Opt-in with SFA Focus on Coast to Capital priority sectors Lot 1 - £450,000, employed, training needs analysis with businesses, delivery of workplace literacy and numeracy and referral and brokerage for intermediate and higher level skills Lot 2 - £885,000, employed, training needs analysis with businesses, delivery of intermediate and higher level skills Lot 3 - £220,000, unemployed (e.g. recently redundant), delivery of intermediate and higher level skills Possible to bid for 1 or more of the lots Consortia approach would be welcomed Due out by end of May Coast to Capital information workshop beginning of June – tbc Join LinkedIn - Coast to Capital ESIF Partners Forum
