National Honor Society Clinton High School Spring 2017

Welcome! You are currently being considered and reviewed for membership in accordance with the rules and regulations of the NHS and the local chapter’s bylaws. Remember– you are in NO way guaranteed membership in the National Honor Society. Your application must be completed and returned by February 16th (no later than 3:30 pm to Room 400 – Mrs. Waldron’s room.)

What does it mean to be involved in NHS? NHS is not just a club for students with high GPAs, it’s an organization that is built on the principles of character, community, scholarship, and leadership. NHS connects with the CHS community as well as our local community in an effort to enhance the lives of others by freely giving time, talents, and resources when needed. NHS is for you if you are serious about serving WITHOUT receiving compensation for your time, academic credit, or credit from other organization. NHS members must serve a total of 12 hours their junior year, and 12 hours their senior year in order to maintain good-standing with NHS. Six hours yearly must be served through NHS sponsored activities. Six hours yearly may come from pre-approved outside service opportunities at CHS or the community. NHS members must commit to attending meetings during FLEX time during their junior and senior years twice monthly. NHS members must maintain a GPA of 4.0 or higher.

Consideration for Membership Page 1- Explanation of NHS requirements NHS applicants must have a minimal GPA of 4.0 NHS applicants should possess the character qualities of honesty, dependability, and a willingness to serve others as evidenced by school records and teacher recommendations. NHS applicants should have proof of leadership abilities. This can be evidenced by serving in positions or responsibility both inside and outside of NHS. You may have organized events and served in a leadership role without being named to a leadership position, however. NHS applicants should possess a strong desire to serve others for reasons beyond being compensated or receiving academic credit.

Application Checklist and Signature Page After completing the application, please go through the checklist and make sure that you and your parent have signed the signature page.

Section I: Administrative Information Fill in your current information. Section II: Written Response Yes, you have to write an essay. Read all of the directions, and answer both questions. The essay can be in first person, but it should be written formally. As you write, keep in mind the four cornerstones of the National Honor Society: Character Leadership Scholarship Community Service

Section III: Leadership Positions These are positions that you have been appointed to, elected to, or served in to help organize an event or activity. This section requires a signature of an adult supervisor. Justify your leadership positions or explain your desire to grow in leadership if you have not had much leadership experience. Section IV: Service Activities   List any service activities in which you have participated and note any major accomplishments in each. These should be activities for which you were not compensated financially or with academic credit. Specifically, describe how many hours you spend doing the activity (once, weekly, monthly, and annually).

V. Extracurricular Activities List all activities in which you have participated in high school. Include clubs, teams, musical groups, theatrical productions, etc. and major accomplishments in each. You must obtain a signature for each activity in order to verify your participation

Section VI: Work Experience, Recognition, Awards List below any job experiences, honors, or awards that you received during your high school career that may support your bid to be selected into the National Honor Society. Work experience may be paid or volunteer. You must obtain a signature for each activity in order to verify your participation Remember to list any and all work experience you have. This may be paid or unpaid

NHS Recommendation Forms Fill in your name for both forms before handing it to each teacher who agrees to fill out your form. Do not wait until the due date to hand teachers a recommendation form, they need AT LEAST one week to complete the form. The form WILL NOT be returned to you! Just leave one form with each of the two teachers you choose to fill it out, and they should take care of the rest. It is okay to follow up and make sure they have turned the form in by February 16, to Mrs. Waldron’s box.

3:30 on February 16th Important Notice The application is due NO LATER THAN: 3:30 on February 16th Any form submitted after the deadline will not be considered for membership. If you attempt to hand in a form at 3:31 on the day of the deadline it WILL NOT be considered– NO EXCEPTIONS You may only submit your application to Mrs. Waldron in Room 400 during FLEX time or after school, or between classes. Do NOT attempt to turn in a form DURING CLASS. At the time of submission you must sign off that the application was turned in. Questions? See Mrs. McMann or Mrs. Waldron … but do not interrupt their classes. Before/after school or during FLEX time is fine.

Consideration for Membership Relinquishing of Membership rights If for some reason you would not wish to be considered, it is expected that you will turn in the packet with this page completed ASAP! As indicated by the page in your application packet, your parent/guardian must sign this portion as well.

A word of advice… Make a copy of your application. One day soon you will need to fill out college and scholarship applications. You will most likely be required to given much of the same information that is required in this application. Save your essay. Many college and scholarship applications require similar essays. Again, do yourself a favor, and copy this application and save your essay.
