Welcome to AVID Family Night!

About Me SLHS Alumni Teacher at SLHS for 10 years AVID Coordinator for past 3 years BA in History (CSU Hayward) MS in Eduction (CSUEB) Teaching Economics, AVID 11 and AVID 12

11th grade goals College List By end of school year, Students have list of 10 colleges/universities that they are experts on and intent/able to apply to. Write MORE: At least one Academic essay in AVID each grading period (4 per sem.) Develop 4 essential academic skills Analyzing a prompt Focused/Purpose Driven Reading Selective Note taking Integrating Sources into Text

Binder Checks Students will have a divider for each class. Students may have additional binders as required by their teachers, but they must bring them to each binder check. Students are expected to create 15 pages of Cornell Notes* per week. They may use different types of notes for this, but no more than 5 pages from one single class * 20 pages beginning 2nd quarter

IRCs Each IRC is on a new sheet Reflections are shorter Students need to focus on SPECIFIC Goals and SPECIFIC actions to achieve them Parents, please REVIEW these reflections BEFORE signing (push your students to THINK about how THEY will improve) Tutoring slips now require students to write about how they are working to fix their grades (more accountability)

Extracurricular/Volunteering Logs Students should be actively participating in extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, etc.) Not the amount of different activities you do, but the amount of time spent with same ones and depth of involvement (leadership) Volunteering HUGE!!! Students will be required to complete 15 hours per semester! For Junior Year- An essay will be required from each student formalizing the information included on the Volunteer and Extracurricular Log. Yes- meaningful support of the community (Organizations, etc. No! Volunteering- helping teachers clean, helping parents/family at their paid jobs

Preparing for College: A – G Courses The University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) require entering freshmen to complete certain courses in high school. Here is the list of "a-g", with the number of years required in each subject. UC recommends additional years in some areas as indicated. a. History/Social Science (2 years) b. English (4 years) c. Mathematics (3 years, UC recommends 4) d. Laboratory Science (2 years, UC recommends 3) e. Language Other than English (2 years, UC recommends 3) f. Visual/Performing Arts (1 year) g. College Preparatory Elective (1 year)

Preparing for College: Grades and GPA Junior year is CRITICAL. This is the last opportunity for students to boost their grades for college eligibility (Senior year GPA DOES NOT COUNT!!!) Summer School @end of 11th grade COUNTS! Students intent on applying to UC’s must have 11 of their A-G requirements (Core classes) completed WITH a C of BETTER by the end of 11th grade. CSU’s require you to have all A-G requirements completed by the end of 12th grade, BUT they will only use the GPA that students have accrued by the end of Junior year

Preparing for College: College Entrance Tests Most 4-year colleges and universities require: SAT- or the ACT (American College Test) Some colleges also require or recommend the SAT subject tests ALL SLHS Juniors will be given the PSAT (free of charge) during the school week on Oct 11th 2017 ALL SLHS Juniors will be given the SAT (free of charge) during the school week in the Spring 2018 IN ADDITION, All SLHS AVID Juniors will receive SAT/ACT Prep, 2 waivers for EACH test, and time/support registering in class during Spring 2018

Preparing for College: College Entrance Tests UC’s-Certain Majors (Engineering/Science) suggest students take subject area tests WITH the SAT/ACT This is NOT a SUGGESTION, it is a REQUIREMENT!!! Students should be thinking about their majors and researching the testing requirements for different universities. CSU’s- Sat features two sections: Reading/Writing and Math. They also use a practice called super-scoring where they use the best score from each section, even if taken during different test sittings.

Preparing for College: MINIMUM Eligibility Requirements University of California 3.0+ GPA A-G Completion SAT or ACT Test w/Writing Personal Inquiry Questions (formerly “personal statement) Extracurricular Activities California State University 2.0+ GPA A-G Completion SAT Reasoning or ACT Test Uses Eligibility Index Score to determine admission (uses equation ft. GPA and test scores to develop score) Different campuses/majors have different min. scores
