1 Juniors: Preparing for Graduation and College Applications
Class of 2017!

2 HS Graduation Requirements
English – 4 years Math – 3 years (Intermediate Algebra or Integrated Math 3)) Science – 3 years (Including Biology and either Physics or Chemistry) Social Science – 3 years (World History/AP Euro; US; Gov/Econ) PE – 2 years and Fitness Gram Foreign Language – 2 years of same language Fine Art – 1 year Remaining 44 credits must be earned by completing electives. 2.0 GPA

3 A-G Requirements: Applying to 4 year Colleges
A – History/Social Science: 3 Years B – English: 4 Years C – Math: 3 Years - 4 Recommended D – Lab Science: 2 Years - 3 Recommended E – Foreign Language: 2 Years - 3 Recommended F – VAPA (Fine Art): 1 Year G – College Prep Elective: 1 Year ** Colleges do not accept grades of a D or F.

4 Athletics New System Optional PE Athletics elective next year

5 SBAC Testing This Year Standardized testing this year.
Math and English results in the end may exempt students from having to take Math and English placement exams for colleges. (EAP results) You must “Release” your scores so that the colleges may access your results.

7 California State University System (CSU)
23 campuses A-G subject requirements GPA: grades only Min. GPA 2.0, BUT rec. GPA 3.0 SAT + writing or ACT + writing No letters or transcripts Application window: Oct. 1st to Nov. 30th

8 University of California System (UC)
10 campuses A-G subject requirements GPA: grades only Minimum GPA 3.0 SAT + writing or ACT + writing No letters or transcripts Essay required Application open: August 1st Submit: November th

9 Private & Out of State Universities
Admission requirements vary by institution, but most follow similar UC/CSU guidelines in terms of subject requirements and test requirements. Check individual campus websites to determine admission requirements! GPA: grades 9- 12th (Fall semester) SAT & ACT Essay/Personal Statement Letters of Recommendation Extracurricular Activities Deadlines vary greatly; be sure to adhere to each school’s policies!!!

10 College Application Choices
Early Decision - Binding (Should clearly be applicant’s 1st choice) Early Action – Non-Binding May apply to more than one school Must decide by May 1st Regular Decision Rolling – Can apply anytime, notified several weeks after applying

11 Community and Junior Colleges
There are 123 California Community Colleges Transfer to a 4 year is generally easier than for freshman Affordable, convenient, small class sizes. Associates degrees, select Bachelors degrees, and certifications offered Transfer requirements: Private – some after 1 year Public – must have completed 60 units (approx. 2 yrs)

12 College Entrance Exams
SAT Reasoning Test ACT Last testing this spring is June September – December SAT Subject Tests are not required, but recommended Should consider adding the essay Want to see if your college requires these? More schools are becoming test optional each year

13 Essays – Personal Statement
UC - 4 Personal Insight Questions (short essays) Common Application – 1 essay, plus supplements Private Schools - check website Out of State Schools - check website Start over the summer!!!! Revise, revise, revise!

14 Letters of Recommendation
2 teachers and 1 counselor Ask teachers NOW, counselor in fall. Counselor Recommendation Provide: Resume, Essay, Student/Parent Input Questions on Naviance under “about me” Teacher Recommendation Provide: Transcript, Resume, and whatever else they request from you.

15 LJHS Protocol- Transcript Requests
1ST - Turn in Authorization Form!!! Senior year… 2nd - Complete Paper Transcript Form and see the registrar IN PERSON

16 The “To Do List” this Spring…
Create a list of potential schools (Safety, Match, Reach) Research and narrow the list to 6-8 schools Make an Appointment with your Counselor Complete your Resume and Counselor Recommendation Questions on Naviance (in the ‘About Me’ section) Ask Teachers for Letters of Recommendation Take the SAT or ACT

17 Summer Plans… Start your essays!!!!!! Remediate all D’s and F’s!!!
Colleges consider how you spend your free time and summers Many colleges offer summer learning experiences Internships Part-time jobs Additional service hours Start your essays!!!!!! …Don’t just sit on the beach taking in rays!
