What is Counselling? 'Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing.’

The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy is a membership organisation and a registered charity that sets standards for therapeutic practice and provides information for therapists, clients of therapy, and the general public. As the largest professional body representing counselling and psychotherapy in the UK, BACP aims to increase public understanding of the benefits of counselling and psychotherapy, raise awareness of what can be expected from the process of therapy and promote education and/or training for counsellors and psychotherapists.

Why Counselling? Counselling has a growing body of research evidence that supports it’s effectiveness Counselling has a clear set of quality and ethical standards Counselling can offer an alternative to medication or complement medication Counselling forms an integral part of support services offered in Health, Education and Employment Counselling supports the individual to find their own solutions drawing on their resources

What Professionals Say “The BACP Service Accreditation Scheme recognises the centre of excellence that DAPL has become and reflects the crucial role they deliver providing professional therapeutic support for those affected by substance misuse in the local community and beyond.” (Rick Hughes, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) “I continue to value my close working relationship with DAPL and the excellent service they provide to individuals affected by drug and alcohol problems across Fife.” (Dr Zoe Stanley, Clinical Psychologist, Addictions Clinical Psychology)

What the Service users Say “I never felt so listened to in my entire life. It feels so good to finally have someone you can open up to, knowing you won’t be judged or laughed at because you are a junkie no one should care about. The amount of respect and understanding I am getting during my sessions is completely different from anything I have ever experienced. Every single time I leave DAPL’s doors I feel much happier and more confident about myself. I have not been using since my first session here and I believe this time I can really make a great change in my life”.  Zoe, aged 42 “I like seeing my counsellor because she helps me and keeps me safe.” – Mark, aged 9

Outcomes of Counselling ADULTS 83% report a reduction in substance use 83% report an improvement in psychological health / emotional wellbeing 88% report a reduction in risk taking behaviour YOUNG PEOPLE 86% report a reduction in substance use 89% report an improvement in psychological health/emotional wellbeing 91% report a reduction in risk taking behaviour

RECOVERY “Our vision is that Scotland will be a country in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.”
