1 South Somerset Mind Annual General Meeting 2012

2 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any one year.
In fact, 1 in 4 people will experience some form of mental distress during their lifetime. That means you’re likely to know someone – a friend, family member or colleague – who is affected. The problem is there’s still a lot of stigma attached to mental health and people shy away from the issue. All too often when colleagues, friends or family are experiencing mental distress, they don’t feel comfortable talking about it. If you were in their position would you? In fact a recent government report found that 83% of people experiencing mental distress identified stigma and discrimination as a key barrier to their recovery Source: Goldberg and Huxley (1992), Common mental disorders, Routledge

3 According to the World Health Organization, by 2020 depression will be the second most common cause of ill health after heart disease. Mental health problems can affect anyone, rich or poor, young or old, shattering the lives of those affected and the people close to them. And it’s an issue that’s not going to go away.

10 South Somerset Mind Strategic Plan

11 Why have a strategic plan…
The purpose of strategic planning is to set overall goals for our charity and to develop a plan to achieve them. In doing so, we ask three very important questions: What do we do? For whom do we do it? How do we excel? The benefit of focused strategic planning: Increased chance of securing funding More efficient use of limited resources More effective organisation – hence better supported service
